Assistant Chef at Han Cha at the Stony Island Arts Bank on South Stony Island and 67th
Han Cha is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Assistant Chef with a refined aesthetic sensibility to join our kitchen team. At Han Cha, plating is an art form — every dish that leaves our kitchen should be as beautiful as it is delicious. We're looking for someone who treats presentation as seriously as flavor and takes genuine pride in the visual craft of each plate. This is a hands-on role for a passionate cook who wants to grow in a kitchen where artistry and precision matter.
Responsibilities
Prepare, cook, and plate dishes with meticulous attention to visual presentation, composition, color, and detail. Uphold Han Cha's distinctive plating aesthetic and ensure consistency across every dish. Set up and break down stations before and after service. Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment in compliance with health and safety regulations. Monitor food inventory, assist with ordering, and minimize waste. Receive and properly store deliveries, checking for quality and freshness. Contribute creative ideas for plating, menu development, and seasonal specials.
Qualifications
Previous experience as an Assistant Chef, Line Cook, or in a similar kitchen role. A strong eye for detail and a genuine passion for the aesthetics of plating and presentation. Culinary degree or equivalent professional training preferred. Solid knowledge of cooking techniques, kitchen equipment, and food safety standards. Ability to work efficiently and precisely under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Excellent time management, organization, and consistency. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Certifications
Valid Food Handler's Certification required. ServSafe Food Handler or Food Manager Certification strongly preferred. Must maintain all certifications in good standing and comply with local health department requirements.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in a hot kitchen environment and perform repetitive tasks.
