EMT Paramedic

This full time position works Monday-Friday from 7:00am-3:30pm in the Nuclear Medicine/PET Imaging Department. At Houston Methodist, the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Paramedic position is responsible for assisting in the delivery of patient care and services to a diverse patient population and their families. This includes performing EKGs and collecting lab specimens under the direction of the licensed nurse and/or provider. The EMT/Paramedic performs patient care activities of daily living (ADLs) within unit‑specific defined limits and job scope, demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriately, and carries out delegated tasks. Responsibilities include conducting hourly rounding, recording data established by policy and procedure, and reporting observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse and/or provider. The position practices Patient and Family Centered Care in concert with Houston Methodist Experience standards. FLSA Status Non‑exempt Qualifications Education High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post‑secondary education, etc.) Completion of EMT‑A, EMT‑Paramedic program or licensed Paramedic, and/or participation in an EMT‑to‑Paramedic program with classification of an EMT‑Advanced Experience Six months pre‑hospital experience or six months hospital experience as an EMT or Paramedic Licenses and Certifications LP – Licensed Paramedic – State Licensure EMT‑A – Emergency Medical Technician‑Advanced – State Certification EMT‑P – Emergency Medical Technician‑Paramedic – State Certification BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association (within 3 months) NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) – Crisis Prevention Institute (within 3 months) Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates safe job performance through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary for essential job functions Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers in a customer‑service focused manner Demonstrates judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, patients and families Strong time‑management skills Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision; acts as team leader in unit readiness and patient decontamination operations Interacts with peers, staff and physicians in a respectful manner, encouraging open communication and timely reporting of pertinent patient care information Serves as an educational resource for unit competency and validation procedures Contributes to improvement of department scores for employee engagement on unit‑based scorecard Service Essential Functions Provides direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse, documenting screenings, care administered, diagnostic measurements, allergies, medication lists, treatments and procedures (e.g., vital signs, 12‑lead EKG, phlebotomy, ultrasound‑guided IV catheter insertion, CPR, splinting, specimen collection, immobilization by backboard, vehicle extrication) as per policies and procedures Observes patients with hourly rounds, noting condition changes and reporting observations, conditions, and problems to the registered nurse to achieve desired outcomes Responds to call lights and contacts nursing personnel as appropriate** Contributes to improvement of department scores for patient satisfaction on unit‑based scorecard through peer‑to‑peer accountability Quality/Safety Essential Functions Uses rapid assessment to identify patient severity and risk, communicating findings to the licensed nurse and/or provider, and applying critical thinking to monitor high‑risk patients Manages incoming patient information, receiving pre‑arrival notifications per unit protocols and ensuring patient privacy and safety Reports near‑misses and inputs errors promptly into PSN; supports initiatives to prevent pressure injuries, falls, and hospital‑acquired infections; contributes to corrective actions and improvement activities impacting quality and safety targets Finance Essential Functions Utilizes resources efficiently;
