Hiring Bonus A $2,500 hiring bonus is available for lateral or certifiable candidates as a one‑time payout paid upon hire. Responsibilities Preserve the peace by responding to calls for assistance, performing crowd and traffic control, enforcing state and local laws, and providing foot patrol to residential and business areas. Protect life by responding to calls for service and emergency assistance, rendering aid to the physically injured, investigating safety hazards, and taking corrective action. Protect property by performing security checks, observing potential hazards, and taking corrective action by contacting proper authorities. Investigate violations of state laws and local ordinances, arrest violators, secure and protect crime scenes, obtain descriptions of suspects, and enforce traffic laws. Prepare incident and accident reports, affidavits, citations, legal documents, memorandums, and other job‑related forms; testify in court as needed; use computers to enter and query information. Participate in job‑related training and courses to maintain skills and certification. Maintain physical condition necessary to perform official duties and operate equipment including weapons, radios, handcuffs, first aid kits, crime scene kits, and other equipment. Perform service‑related activities including assistance to motorists, animal complaints, nuisance calls, and other warranted calls. Drive and operate police vehicles in routine and emergency situations, including normal day‑to‑day driving, emergency responses, and high‑speed pursuits. Compassion : Show concern and care for those needing police service. Minimum Requirements Be at least 21 years old and a United States Citizen. Certified copy of birth certificate or naturalization certificate required; must be produced at the Police & Fire Commission Interview. Education: Minimum of 30 college credits from an accredited institution; 60 credits required within five years of initial hire. No felony or domestic violence convictions. Valid driver’s license at time of application and throughout employment. Vision 20/40 corrected. Ability to communicate in English, orally and in writing, with clear grammar. Ability to operate a motor vehicle under normal and adverse conditions while maintaining communication and equipment activation. Ability to make quick decisions, observe accurately, use sound judgment, and maintain professionalism. Ability to recall details and apply instructions with high accuracy. Ability to read and comprehend legal and non‑legal material written in English. Ability to learn and comply with department operations, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ability to learn and apply federal, state, and municipal laws related to police duties. Ability to apply concepts, procedures, and techniques related to interviewing, investigations, defense, arrest tactics, evidence preservation, search/seizure, and use of force. Preferred Qualifications Higher education graduation (Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, etc.) Current law enforcement certification Two or more years of previous sworn law enforcement experience Previous non‑sworn law enforcement experience Military service Required Documentation Certified copy of birth certificate or naturalization certificate. If a certified law enforcement officer in Wisconsin, proof of LESB certification and professional history. If a graduate of a Wisconsin Law Enforcement Preparatory Academy, proof of graduation within three years of anticipated hire date. If enrolled in a Wisconsin Law Enforcement Preparatory Academy at the time of application, proof of enrollment. If a military veteran, proof of service and honorable discharge (DD214). Salary The annual salary for certifiable Police Officers, effective 1/1/2026, ranges from $67,229.88 to $95,948.49. Immediate Disqualifiers Adult commission of undetected serious or repetitive crimes. Any conviction of domestic violence. Conviction of any crime carrying a 6‑month or longer sentence, excluding traffic violations. Conviction of any felony or crime involving moral turpitude. Pending litigation or prosecution for criminal offences must be resolved. Driver’s license suspension within the past 12 months. Conviction or pending case for DUI, DWI, or hit-and-run within the last 2 years. Illegal possession of heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or schedule 1/2 drugs within the last 2 years. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 2 years. Cheating on any examination or testing associated with the position. Dishonorable discharge from military service. Untruthfulness or intentional withholding of information on any application, interview, or paperwork. Areas of Concern Criminal history: Juvenile crimes, plea agreements, reduced charges. Drug involvement: Juvenile sale or distribution. Personal history: Unfavorable employment references or erratic work record. Traffic violations: Multiple DUI convictions or reckless driving patterns.
