The Employee Benefits (EB) Consulting Practice offers excellent retirement, health, compensation, and investment consulting services to our clients. Health Consulting Actuaries are an integral part of the overall client management and client relationships in Milliman’s Employee Benefits Consulting practice. The successful candidate will have at least twenty years of employer health actuarial experience with a minimum of ten years consulting experience, with a strong working knowledge of actuarial concepts, benefits design, delivery, financing, and strategy. This candidate should be in a leadership position in their current or previous role(s), which could be equal to a Principal or similar status. They should also have a proven track record at generating business. This full‑time, hybrid position will be part of a team supporting the delivery of consulting projects as well as maintaining existing and growing new client relationships. This position will be focused on the support of the multiemployer health benefits market with the potential for select public and/or corporate clients. What You Will Do In this role, you will lead Employer Health Benefits engagements, managing complex client projects and relationships while delivering actuarial and strategic guidance on plan design, financials, benefit strategy, and vendor selection/management. Oversee end‑to‑end marketing and vendor searches across all coverage lines; represent the practice with clients and partners; identify opportunities; ensure rigorous project tracking and peer review; build strong internal partnerships; and contribute to business development and prospect presentations. Lead relationships for select health clients, serve as the Consulting Actuary for all deliverables and manage large, complex client projects. Provide senior level actuarial and consulting support to clients, including plan design, financial analysis and projections, benefit strategy, and vendor selection and management. Manage/oversee the marketing and vendor search process for potentially all lines of coverage, with a focus on medical and pharmacy coverage. Leverage expertise and experience to build and strengthen relationships, representing the practice with key customers, prospects, providers, and other market stakeholders. Develop and participate in strategic opportunities for the sale or cross‑sell of consulting services to clients and prospects. Follow established Milliman protocol for work quality and comply with peer review standards. Establish and maintain strong working relationships with appropriate consultants within Milliman. Participate in developing and making marketing presentations to new prospects. What We Are Looking For We’re seeking a seasoned Health Consulting Actuary (20+ years) with deep expertise in benefits design, delivery, financing, and strategy. The ideal candidate excels at leadership, client management and relationship building, contributes to the delivery of complex consulting projects, and helps grow new and existing business. Experience with multiemployer plans is required, with the potential to also support public and/or corporate clients. This is a full‑time, hybrid role within a collaborative team environment, requiring strong communication, analytical, and project management skills. Professional Qualifications At least ten years of employer health consulting experience in a lead role. Bachelor’s degree. Minimum Designation: ASA, MAAA Health and life insurance license preferred. Demonstrated success providing health actuarial and consulting services. Current and relevant knowledge of legislation, market trends and issues affecting the employer health market. Proven new business success, successful staff management, and leadership of large, complex client relationship. Experience with coverage for the retiree market, including knowledge of Medicare programs. Thorough understanding of the marketing / vendor search process and the ability to manage the total process. Thorough understanding of medical and prescription drug coverage. The ability to lead actuarial teams and review and deliver core health actuarial work. Thorough understanding of self‑insurance and stop‑loss coverage concepts. Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with an ability to present and manage presentations covering complex topics. Strong knowledge of employer health legal and regulatory framework. Effective time management skills to prioritize and organize multiple complex projects. Strong skills as a problem solver, including taking initiatives to complete necessary research and document the process used to reach conclusions. Travel (local and regionally) required. Location This position is based in Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, Orange County, CA, Walnut Creek, CA, New York, NY or Little Falls, NJ. Candidates hired in this role must be willing to work in‑person in the Milliman office on a weekly basis, but flexible work arrangements will be considered for our hybrid environment. Compensation The overall salary range for this role is $160,700 - $365,240. For candidates residing in: Orange County, CA, Walnut Creek, CA, Seattle, WA, New York, NY and Little Falls, NJ the salary range is $184,805 - $365,240. Portland, OR the salary range is $160,700 - $317,600.
