Title: Seasonal Youth Development State Fair & State Shoot (continuous posting)

Classification: 0003 Seasonal/Fair, limited to 67 days per calendar year if working over 14 hours/week

Appointment: Temporary, Hourly/Time card position, 0-40+ hours per week

Pay Range: Depending on education, qualifications, experience, and position type:

  1. State Shoot Grounds Coordinator, $17.75-$21 an hour
  2. 4-H State Fair - Facilities Coordinator, $15.25-$16.18 an hour
  3. 4-H State Fair - Livestock Coordinator, $15.25-$16.18 an hour
About the Positions

This is a continuous posting for the Extension Department of Youth Development. This posting is for roles like 4-H State Shoot Grounds Coordinator, State Fair Coordinators, and similar roles, assisting current Directors and the department to fulfill its goals and responsibilities. These roles provide flexible, high-impact assistance across key programming, administrative and logistical functions of the department. The primary purpose of these positions is to support program and administrative functions. These positions are not eligible for overtime, and hours are worked mainly at the State Fair or State Shoot location.

Location and Work environment:

Positions located at the MN State Fairgrounds or Alexandria, MN Shooting Park. Positions may include work both indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, etc. Interest in available locations and roles will be collected in the required job screening questionnaire.

Current University of Minnesota or system employees are NOT eligible for any 0003 seasonal job.

Work Schedule:

Weekly work schedule will vary and will be 0 - 40+ hours per week, depending on the program needs. Work may take place during the day, evenings and/or weekends. Some positions may require overnight work arrangements. Work schedule may include travel to various sites for programming. A specific work schedule will be determined with the supervisor.

Positions: (1) State Shoot Grounds Coordinator

Overview: Work with the 4-H Outdoor Education Program Director to maintain shooting ranges and coordinate equipment and supply needs for the 4-H Shooting Sports and Wildlife Invitational. Pay range: $17.75-$21.00 an hour. Work is done September 10-13, 2026; may be daytime, evening, weekend, or all.

Responsibilities may include:

Under the directive of the 4-H Outdoor Education Program Director, or their designee:

  • Set up, maintain, and tear down shooting ranges and event areas according to range/event layout plans. This includes but is not limited to painting lines, setting up targets, setting posts, handling lumber, setting up backstops, assembling canopies, setting up and tearing down tables and chairs, stringing caution tape/roping off areas, setting up in buildings for silent auction and conservation exhibits, etc
  • Unload and reload trailers with a variety of items; this may involve the use of a pallet jack, skid loader or forklift, and manual labor
  • During competition times, assist at the ranges as needed by checking in participants, inspecting youth gear, switching targets, transporting targets to the scoring area, or scoring
  • Maintain supplies and monitor needs throughout the event
  • Inventory supplies at the end of the event and report to the 4-H Shooting Sports & Wildlife Event Manager
  • Enforce 4-H rules and regulations
  • Model standards for positive conduct, including language, appearance and behavior
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • Complete the job screening questionnaire to be considered for any roles (
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be at least 21 years old by the start date
  • Driver's license and applicable insurance (in order to drive ATV/UTV and other vehicles)
  • Experience working with the MN 4-H State Shooting Sports & Wildlife program
  • Experience working with firearms and firearm safety
  • The ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents, adult volunteers, and staff
  • Good problem-solving skills and a solid understanding of risk management
  • The ability to tolerate loud noises, wear ear protection, wear eye protection, or take other safety measures to work in areas with environmental hazards (e.g. guns discharging, etc)
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to safely and effectively operate skid steer, forklift, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), utility vehicle (UTV) or golf cart as needed to move around supplies, meals, trash, etc
  • Must have the knowledge and skills to safely and correctly use hand tools and power tools (twist, apply pressure, handle vibrating hand tools/motions, comfort with electric and battery-powered tools, etc)
  • Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 50 pounds frequently
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, etc.
(2) 4-H State Fair - Facilities Coordinator

Overview: Work with the Director of State and County Fairs Programs to oversee 4-H building operations at the Minnesota State Fair. Pay range: $15.25-$16.18 an hour. Work is done August 3-September 10, 2026; daytime, evening, and weekend. The Facilities Coordinator will work from the 4-H Building at the State Fairgrounds.

Responsibilities may include:
  • Coordinate the move to and from the fairgrounds (hire moving company, ensure good communication, and give direction for supplies/equipment moves).
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of 4-H'ers, chaperones and 4-H staff pertaining to activities at the State Fair.
  • Overseeing daily 4-H building maintenance and cleaning with assistance from maintenance staff.
  • Work with State Fair Employment office to fill any last minute staffing that arise.
  • Pick up supplies from various vendors and deliver them to the various offices around the fairgrounds and transport staff, 4-H'ers and volunteers as needed. May be driving a personal vehicle, University Fleet Services vehicle or golf cart.
  • Any other miscellaneous tasks that the Superintendent or others ask.

  • Ability to work with and support youth and adults from a wide range of experiences and backgrounds.

  • Experience using computer software technology
  • Skills in verbal and written communication and strong organizational skills
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends during the MN State Fair
  • Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with University policy.
Preferred qualification:
  • Previous experience in Minnesota 4-H Youth Development with facility coordination.
(3) 4-H State Fair - Livestock Coordinator

Overview: Work with the Director of State and County Fairs Programs to implement the judging experience for all livestock 4-H projects that come to the Minnesota State Fair. Pay range: $15.25-$16.18 an hour. Work is done August 3-September 9, 2026; daytime, evening, and weekend. The Livestock Coordinator will work from the 4-H Building and Livestock Office at the State Fairgrounds.

Responsibilities may include:
  • Complete the job screening questionnaire to be considered for any roles (
  • Work in conjunction with the species exhibit assistants to carry out 4-H livestock shows at the state fair
  • Encourage leadership, growth and communication between species exhibit assistants
  • Act as a resource during livestock encampment and respond to species committee requests
  • Facilitate the Livestock Committee Meeting
  • Help with troubleshooting and problem solving during weigh-ins, livestock shows, and load-outs
  • Assist in the planning details of the auction
  • Contribute to the show catalogs regarding bonus trips awarded and other livestock awards
  • Pick up supplies from various vendors and deliver them to the various offices around the fairgrounds and transport staff, 4-H'ers and volunteers as needed. May be driving a personal vehicle, University Fleet Services vehicle or golf cart.

Qualifications

Additional Requirements/Working Conditions for All Positions:
  • A willingness to become familiar with and work within the philosophy and guidelines of University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota 4-H program.
  • Must complete all required training, including but not limited to Safety of Minors and Civil Rights training
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with University policy.
  • Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds (or more if noted in specific job description)
  • Must be able to stand for 90 minutes at a time or sit for 90 minutes at a time. Some days will require hours of standing or sitting
  • Must complete University of Minnesota payroll paperwork, including completing an in-person I-9 (identification verification process), and have a successful completion of a background check with motor vehicle record review before the first day of work.
  • This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship
