Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) is in West Columbia, South Carolina, approximately 7 miles southwest of downtown Columbia. The airport offers 25 nonstop flights on major airlines, connecting travelers to key destinations across the U.S. It serves as a convenient gateway to the state's capital and surrounding regions.
The Columbia VA opened in 1932 at its current location and now includes seven community-based outpatient clinics located throughout South Carolina in the Upstate, Midlands, and Pee Dee areas, serving 36 of 45 counties in South Carolina. The seven CBOCs are in Anderson, Florence, Greenville, Orangeburg, Rock Hill, Spartanburg, and Sumter. All clinics except for Rock Hill are VA-staffed. The mission of the Columbia VA Health Care System is to provide Veterans-focused, performance-driven health care, and the main facility, the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center, has a long and proud history of providing South Carolina Veterans with the highest quality health care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to)
- Board Certified dedicated Ophthalmologist to provide care for diverse group of Veterans and retirees and their eligible dependents, and eligible veterans to beneficiaries of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Columbia VA Medical Center Assess and examine patients to diagnose and develop treatment plans.
- Manage ophthalmic conditions, considering both medical and psychological aspects of patient care.
- Collaborate with other physician specialists and medical staff in overall treatment of patient medical conditions.
- Manage medical disorders affecting vision, such as inflammatory, vascular, neurological and genetic disorders, thyroid eye disease, diabetes and strokes.
- Must serve as fully functioning comprehensive ophthalmologist, including performing YAG capsulotomy, SLT, LPI, minor eyelid lesion removal, chalazion I/C, intraocular injections, periocular injections; educate and train residents to perform these.
- Communicate with patients and family members, educating them to understand their medical condition and ongoing care requirements.
- Complete clinical charting and documentation in CHCS, AHLTA, and ESSENTRIS systems, as well as forthcoming GENESIS system(s) in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Participate in Resident Physician education, staffing their clinical encounters as well as surgical cases; actively recruit and share surgical patients with Resident Physicians.
- Take overnight and weekend call on a rotating basis typically averages to 6-8 weeks per year.
- Typical monthly encounter target will be 300 patient encounters, adjusted for leave time.
- Perform other duties as assigned within scope of clinical privileges to meet the patient care needs of CVAMC, to include administrative duties specific to Ophthalmology
Requirements:
- A current, valid, unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from any State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
- Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
