Practical Nurse

Overview The Outpatient Oncology Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is part of the MSSC Services at the Kansas City VA Medical Center located in Kansas City, MO. With a focus on direct patient‑centered care, the Outpatient Specialty Clinic LPN actively participates as part of a high‑functioning care team and works closely with Registered Nurses (RNs), physicians, and other team members to provide efficient, high‑quality care. The role is for Oncology and Dermatology. Responsibilities Knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and procedures specific to the designated patient population. Knowledge of disease entities of the patient population to enable patient/family education in an individualized manner. Skill to use equipment, supplies and materials for the purpose of delivering care to the designated population. Ability to recognize deviations from normal and respond effectively in urgent or emergent situations. Documentation of all clinical interactions as part of visits, phone calls or secure messaging. Assist and/or complete minor procedures – including obtaining and arranging necessary equipment, positioning patient, ensuring comfort and privacy, obtaining and labeling laboratory specimens and preparing clinical rooms for use. Technically proficient in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations. Ability to observe, identify and respond to the patient’s needs for care including medication, equipment‑assisted care and patient/family education. Consider emotional, cultural, spiritual, socio‑economic and age‑related factors when organizing and delivering care. Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous) and perform treatments according to established policies and procedures. Observe for physical and emotional changes in patient’s condition after medication/treatment and report deviations to RN or MD/DO. Accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information. Work Schedule: 07:30 am – 04:00 pm, Monday – Friday. Telework and virtual positions are not authorized. Qualifications United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate state agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time of program completion. Verification can be obtained from the state approving agency or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or District of Columbia. Any LPN with a license that has ever been revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited or placed on probation may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions of chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16 of this part. English language proficiency – spoken and written, as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Grade determinations: GS‑3 (none beyond the basic requirements); GS‑4 (six months of qualifying experience or one year of experience at an approved school); GS‑5 (one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑4 level or equivalent); GS‑6 (one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS‑5 level or equivalent). The performance level of this vacancy is GS‑06; actual grade selection range is GS‑03 to GS‑06. Physical standards as outlined in VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
