Special Investigator (Non-peace officer)

Job Description and Duties Under the supervision of a Supervising Special Investigator (SSI), the Special Investigator (SI) conducts self‑initiated civil investigations and independently conducts criminal investigations. The SI evaluates tips, referrals, reports, complaints, and other allegations of fraud to detect or verify suspected violations of the California False Claims Act or other statutes, regulations, and rules that may create potential civil liability by Medi‑Cal providers. The SI also evaluates criminal allegations to detect or verify suspected violations or provisions within the mission of the Division of Medi‑Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse (DMFEA). This includes, but is not limited to, complex and inter‑jurisdictional schemes and assists in civil actions and criminal prosecution. Incumbents may work independently or within a team that executes a thorough investigation of alleged violations and pursues cases for prosecution where applicable. The SI independently performs assigned tasks skillfully, professionally, courteously, and efficiently with initiative and excellent judgment. Operational direction may be received from a Supervising Deputy Attorney General or the SSI II (non‑peace officer). Job Requirements Travel is required throughout the state of the nation as necessary. Successful completion of a California POST OC 832 Search and Seizure course is required, which may be performed after hire. New-to-State employees will be given the minimum salary Range A, unless you meet Alternate Range Criteria 156 as follows: Salary Ranges Range A: This range shall apply to individuals who do not meet the criteria for payment in Range B or Range C. Range B: This range shall apply to individuals who have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of 12 months of experience in Range A of the same class and may apply to persons who have the equivalent of 12 months of satisfactory experience outside of State service performing duties similar to those of the class beyond the experience required to meet the minimum qualifications of the class. Range C: This range shall apply to individuals who have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of 24 months of experience in Range B of the same class and may apply to persons who have the equivalent of 36 months of satisfactory experience outside of State service performing duties similar to those of the class beyond the experience required to meet the minimum qualifications of the class.
