ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

The School of Library and Information Science at the University of Iowa (SLIS) invites applications for an academic-year instructional track faculty at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor. The position will begin August 09, 2027, with the possibility of a January 04, 2027 start date, if desired. This is a full-time academic-year (9 month) instructional track faculty position with an initial three-year appointment. Renewal is possible, dependent on recurrent funding and performance. We seek an individual with expertise and experience in special collections librarianship and archives, and/or academic librarianship, addressing research, preservation and technical aspects of work with both digital and physical collections in academic, community and cultural heritage settings. The successful applicant will be expected to teach four courses during the fall and spring semesters (one of which is fulfilled each semester by overseeing coordination of all practicum experiences for non-teacher librarian students in the SLIS Program), and serve SLIS in recruiting and advising. 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work with faculty, staff, and students to implement the mission of the University of Iowa and the School of Library and Information Science through the following:

•Teach and mentor SLIS graduate students.

•Service through participation in department, college, and university committees.

•Leadership and service in support of the School’s and University’s mission.

Appointment

This is a 9-month academic year instructional track position at the rank of assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor. The initial three-year appointment is anticipated to start as early as January 04, 2027, or as late as August 09, 2027.

About the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS)

The School of Library and Information Science offers MA programs at the main campus in Iowa City as well as fully online. The School of Library and Information Science(SLIS) was granted continued accreditation status by the American Library Association in July 2024.

SLIS offers classes synchronously, asynchronously, and hybrid. Synchronous and hybrid classes meet one day a week for 2.5 hours. Distance students may participate in live hybrid classes with campus students, increasing opportunities to collaborate, build collegial relationships, and learn from practicing experts in the field.

SLIS has a strong history of interdisciplinary projects and partnerships, including the UI Center for the Book, the English Ph.D. program, the College of Law, and the College of Education. All SLIS faculty have collaborative relationships with other units on campus, with such collaboration actively encouraged by both SLIS and College leadership.

Successful candidates will be required to disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

An MLIS from an ALA-accredited program.

•Three years of LIS professional experience, preferably within special collections, archives, academic library, or other GLAM organization. A PhD in LIS or related discipline may be substituted.

•Capacity to work with students specializing in areas across LIS disciplines

•Demonstrated teaching experience in K-12 or higher education settings, preferably at the Master's level.

•Evidence of excellent online teaching skills in higher education academic programs.

•Experience in program coordination, recruiting, and advising.

•Experience in teaching and mentoring graduate students.•Successful experience in grants or external research funding.
