Duties

Help

The primary duties of this position are:

  • Performs a variety of intermediate up to advanced skill level maintenance duties for industrial facilities and equipment associated with dams, hydroelectric power plants, and related facilities.
  • Maintains and repairs equipment and facilities in an industrial environment requiring an intermediate skill level in a variety of trades, including masonry, concrete, carpentry, welding, plumbing, painting, and mechanical.
  • Performs work independently, as a member of a work team consisting of different trades, and/or by providing technical direction to co-workers or helpers.
Examples of work include:
  • Makes structural repairs, additions and modifications; constructs and erects scaffolds, including suspended scaffolds; maintains and repairs valves, gates, metal work, sewage and water systems, pumps, fans, motors, compressors, etc.; mixes, places, and finishes concrete; threads, solders, cuts, and assembles water and sewage pipes; performs minor welding repairs using air/gas and electric arc processes; and performs and/or assists in the disassembly, repair, and assembly of machinery and equipment.
  • Operates and uses a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools, such as cranes, welders, farm tractors, motorboats, forklifts, motorized man-lifts, light trucks, front-end loaders, road grader, tractor-trailer rig, large trucks with snowplows, impact wrenches, grinders, etc.

Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated. Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience . For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement as the service dates will be reflected. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  3. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  4. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
  5. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  6. Knowledge of Materials
  7. Use of Measuring Instruments

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Exerts moderately heavy physical effort which includes lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. Climbing ladders and stairs, walking, standing, kneeling, crawling, or bending for long periods of time may be required in performing maintenance duties. Maintenance duties may also involve working from suspended scaffolding and motorized man-lifts at substantial heights and working in closed restricted quarters and confined spaces.

Working Conditions: The work is accomplished in and around dams, powerplants, and related facilities with exposure to high levels of noise, moving parts, hazardous materials, and electrical hazards. Work is also performed outside under prevailing weather and terrain conditions. Some work assignments are performed in confined spaces, closed and restricted quarters, and at substantial heights.
