Job Description The Springfield City School District, home to The John Legend Theatre, is seeking an Athletic Director for the 2026‑2027 school year to manage and coordinate the district athletic activities and sports programs. The role promotes athletics and physical fitness as positive extra‑curricular activities, ensuring all students have equal opportunity. Qualifications Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university Knowledge and understanding of the overall operations of an athletic program Member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Valid teaching license preferred Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) certification preferred Experience in athletics (as Varsity Head Coach) at the university or high school level Administrative experience Responsibilities Evaluate extra‑curricular athletic programs and engage in long‑range planning Asses department needs through consultation with students, staff, parents and develop policy recommendations for the Board's consideration and action Maintain files and records required by policy, regulation, law and good practice Attend all mandatory meetings including GWOC, school coaches, and pre‑season parent meetings Implement board policies and advise the administration on legal matters related to athletics Develop and update brochures, handbooks and policy manuals Conduct research related to athletic programs Keep the school community informed about extracurricular athletic programs Present a positive image of the district through professional and ethical conduct Engage in fiscal planning—both short and long‑range Assist in preparing and implementing the school system budget and coordinate department purchasing Recommend capital improvements and negotiate contracts and agreements Formulate specifications for contracts and bids Serve as a consultant in the selection of supplies and materials Supervise ticket sales and fundraising events and handle accounting of monies Administer receipt and disbursement of student activity cash funds Conduct salary and wage surveys Supervise and guide the fiscal planning/execution of all parent volunteer organizations supporting high school and middle school athletic programs Prepare schedules for use of facilities Issue timely announcements of upcoming events and deadlines Organize, schedule and administer the overall program of extracurricular athletics in conjunction with GWOC commissioner and coaches Hire officials, team physicians, supervisors and police for supervision of home contests Arrange transportation for athletic contest participants Verify each athlete's eligibility for participation in each sport Arrange all details of visiting teams' needs as appropriate Provide emergency health care and first‑aid treatment Arrange field, gymnasium and aquatics center practice schedules, including arrangements for summer recreation programs and non‑school use of playing fields and facilities Recruit, screen, interview and recommend prospective coaches Make coaching assignment recommendations Supervise and evaluate coaching staff and other athletic personnel Perform other duties as assigned What We Offer As a contracted employee, this position works 228 days per year, 8 hours per day. Salary details are available within the SASO/SAST Agreement. Starting salary is in accordance with the negotiated agreement and increases with experience and education. Contracted employees receive competitive benefits; all employees receive professional development. The SASO/SAST agreement and the Board of Education are currently working on a new professional agreement.
