The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience. Summary of Job Function The Medical Technologist assumes responsibility for the performance of routine, standardized biological and/or biochemical tests, as well as more complex procedures on blood, urine, tissues, body fluids and other specimens that assist physicians in diagnosing and managing patients. The role includes recognizing results or problems that require referral to the Supervisor, Manager and/or Pathologist, and performing additional tasks as requested by the Chairman of Pathology or their designee. Qualifications Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or related science. Knowledge of specialized principles or techniques normally obtained through a formal four‑year college/university program. Registry with a recognized board of registry for medical technology, such as ASCP preferred. Successful completion of all Orientation Programs. Work Environment and Hazards Well‑lit, sometimes poorly ventilated and intermittently noisy environment. Stressful pressure episodes. Frequent work with infectious biological materials, stains, caustic, toxic and noxious agents. Occasional potential for electrical shock and laceration. Special Physical Demands: Moderate amounts of sitting, standing or walking; occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects up to 20 pounds. Job Specific Requirements Adhere to safety policies regarding safe handling and disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps; maintain a clean and safe work environment and patient confidentiality. Answer telephone calls, providing factual information within hospital guidelines. Assume in‑charge responsibilities when assigned in the absence of Section Supervisor or Senior Medical Technologist. Complete mandatory education in a timely manner and participate in ongoing service and continuing education. Prioritize tasks, giving STAT requests top priority and performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Communicate with physicians, nursing staff, technologists, clerical staff, phlebotomists and students regarding specimen or result inquiries. Determine acceptability of specimens; resolve discrepancies with accessioning personnel, procurement dispatch technicians, nursing personnel, physicians and other personnel. Enter, delete/edits and orders in the Laboratory Information System per physician or nursing requisition; forward requisition to front office for billing. Maintain appropriate amounts of reagents/supplies by performing scheduled inventory, observing expiration dates; record lot numbers and expiration dates in designated logs. Maintain positive identification of specimen throughout processing and testing; consult Technical Specialist/Pathologist when unusual requests received. Perform, document and evaluate required quality control procedures; document corrective actions or reasons for accepting out‑of‑range results; notify Supervisor if additional action is needed. Periodically review policy/procedure/instrument manuals to ensure compliance; maintain current knowledge and train new employees. Recognize situations or results that need to be brought to the attention of the Technical Specialist, Pathologist or Administrative Director. Ensure all written and verbal reports are accurate before release; follow protocol for reporting critical values; document results/phone calls on log sheets. Unit/Department Specific Competencies Demonstrate proficiency by receiving acceptable performance of internal and external proficiency supplies. Participate in evaluation and correlation of new procedures and instrumentation; perform, document maintenance per schedule; recognize instrumentation failure and notify Section Supervisor. Perform routine and complex analytical tests on blood, urine, body fluids and other specimens accurately; maintain equipment and perform minor troubleshooting as necessary. Recognize results requiring attention of Section Supervisor, Manager and/or Pathologist. Schedule Position is Monday through Friday with regular rotating weekends and rotating holidays.
