Organ Recovery Coordinator I

The Organ Recovery Coordinator I evaluates the medical eligibility of potential organ donor referrals and organ imports. Facilitates or coordinates organ donation activities including comprehensive medical management of the donor, assists with organizational quality improvement projects, and serves as a clinical resource for Hospital Services and Family Services to maximize donation opportunities.

Key responsibilities include maintaining the highest standards of professional conduct and interpersonal relationship development; promoting a positive and collaborative work environment. Responding to initial organ donor referrals and following up on referred patients when on shift. Completing referral evaluations for the purpose of determining organ and tissue donor suitability based on LCO, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), OPTN/UNOS, Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and recommendations. Demonstrating an understanding of the legal and hospital requirements for death declaration and organ donation. Identifying the patients legal next-of-kin in accordance with state and Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (UAGA) statutes. Assessing family dynamics, availability of hospital support system, and family needs (e.g., cultural, religious, emotional, informational).

Clinically managing the organ donor per LCO protocols and under direction of the Medical Director or AOC, allocating organ(s) in accordance with LCO and OPTN/UNOS policy, facilitating recovery and preservation of organs in the O.R, and completing all related documentation per standards. Identifying organ- and tissue-specific and behavioral risk factors in accordance with LCO and regulatory guidelines. Knowledgeable of the pathophysiological sequalae of brain death and endeavors to physiologically manage the donor to achieve optimal organ function within the parameters defined by the associated protocols under the guidance of the AOC, Physician Consultants, and Medical Director. Collaborating with hospital staff to evaluate and physiologically manage the donor to achieve optimal organ function. Understanding and complying with procedural aspects and requirements of blood, culture and typing specimen collection and labeling. Reviewing and documenting required information within the donor record, including labs, diagnostics, and procedural records. Coordinating transportation and logistics of organs, blood, tissue typing materials, and recovery teams. Coordinating interdepartmental processes, including post-recovery communication. Complying with LCO and OPTN/UNOS policies regarding documentation, maintenance, and confidentiality of records. Performing quality control on donor records; assisting with quality improvement and Recovery Department projects, and performing other duties as required.

Education Requirements: Associate degree in nursing, respiratory therapy, EMT, paramedic medicine or certification as a paramedic, or related biological science (including Transplantation and Donation Sciences). A Bachelor's degree or higher in nursing, respiratory therapy, or related biological science is preferred.

Experience Requirements: Organ Recovery Coordinator or Hospital ER, ICU, and surgical experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Ability to effectively "read" another person and guide your actions by your understanding of their individual needs or values. Strong computer and data entry skills including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet. Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills, which demonstrate good judgment. Sensitivity and high degree of confidentiality required.

Licenses or Certificates: The following certifications are preferred but are required to obtain within 12 months: BLS, ACLS, PALS. The following certification is preferred but required to obtain within 24 months: CPTC.

Supervision: Reports to the Manager of Recovery Services. Supervision Exercised: None.

Working Environment: Work environment varies from office to home office environment to clinical practice areas.
