Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year License: Active IL RN Licensure Certifications: BLS Certification Must-Have: Ability to titrate Heparin drips Description: The unit consists of 29 beds. Typical patient census ranges from 22-26, with a target of 25. Patients are accommodated in private and semi-private rooms. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5:1 during the day and 5-6:1 at night. Common diagnoses include GI bleeds, sepsis, cellulitis, CHF, COVID-19, comfort measures, osteomyelitis, and DVT. The unit primarily handles medical diagnoses. Patients may leave for surgeries or procedures and return to the unit afterward. Registered Nurses are required to titrate Heparin drips. There is a charge nurse available 24/7, with the goal of being free of patient assignments. Crisis RN coverage is also available around the clock. Patient care technicians are present with a ratio of 1:10. Respiratory therapy equipment does not include vents, but patients may require oxygen up to 6L via nasal cannula or stable BiPAP/CPAP. Telemetry patients are monitored remotely through a dedicated telemetry department. Registered Nurses are not required to read their own strips. There is a unit clerk available 24/7 for administrative support. Shifts are scheduled as 12-hour shifts with report times at 7 AM and 7 PM. Nurses are expected to work every other weekend and holidays are rotated. Travelers may float to other medical-surgical units as needed, excluding ICUs and chemotherapy patients. Staff are required to provide their own scrubs in any color, excluding pediatric scrubs. Nurses are expected to attempt IV starts and may utilize unit resources if unsuccessful.
