PART I: SUMMARY OF POSITION

This job assignment is accountable for instructing student athletes in a specific sports activity and providing leadership in helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship and an increased level of self-esteem.

PART II: MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1. Current teacher or substitute certification in the State of Illinois OR complete the American Sports Education Program (ASEP) coaching certification set forth by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA)

B. CREDENTIALS:

1. Bloodborne Pathogens Training/Hepatitis B Shots Series Training
2. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
3. Valid Illinois Driver's License
4. First Aid/CPR Certification preferred

C. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of prevention, care, and treatment of minor athletic injuries.
2. Knowledge of coaching techniques, human behavior, and athlete development.
3. Knowledge of the specific sport, including rules, strategies, and safety practices.
4. Knowledge of district athletic program goals and the Code of Ethics for Coaches.
5. Knowledge of state, federal, and Board of Education policies related to student conduct and discipline.
6. Strong coaching and instructional skills.
7. Effective oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
8. Active listening skills that support positive athlete relationships.
9. Organizational and problem-solving skills.
10. Leadership skills that promote teamwork, accountability, and sportsmanship.
11. Ability to establish and maintain positive rapport with students.
12. Ability to de-escalate conflicts and diffuse challenging situations appropriately.
13. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others.

15. Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the coaching assignment.

PART III: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Serves as Head Coach for the assigned sport and provides overall leadership, organization, and direction of the athletic program.
2. Plans, organizes, and conducts practices in accordance with District policy and Illinois High School Association (IHSA) rules and regulations.
3. Coaches student-athletes in the individual and team skills, fundamentals, strategies, and techniques necessary for successful athletic performance.
4. Organizes and effectively utilizes practice time, including drills, repetition of fundamentals, conditioning, and skill development activities.
5. Supervises and manages student-athlete behavior during practices, competitions, travel, and other athletic events.
6. Promotes and enforces discipline, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and appropriate behavior consistent with District expectations and athletic codes of conduct.
7. Provides a positive, inclusive, supportive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for student-athletes.
8. Ensures student-athletes meet eligibility, conduct, participation, dress, equipment, and safety requirements in accordance with District and IHSA regulations.
9. Maintains a safe athletic environment by monitoring facilities, equipment, fields, courts, and activity areas and taking reasonable precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
10. Assumes primary responsibility for the preparation, organization, and appropriate upkeep of fields, courts, and practice areas associated with the assigned sport.
11. Ensures the proper care, storage, maintenance, and inventory of athletic equipment and uniforms and recommends purchases of equipment, supplies, and uniforms as appropriate.
12. Maintains accurate and timely records and documentation as required, including attendance, rosters, accident reports, insurance documentation, inventories, and awards information.
13. Coordinates with the Athletic Director, as necessary, regarding scheduling of contests, events, facilities, and transportation.
14. Provides required information, reports, rosters, inventories, award information, and other documentation to the Athletic Director in a timely manner.
15. Participates in the selection, training, supervision, development, and evaluation of Assistant Coaches in consultation with the Athletic Director and in accordance with District procedures.
16. Provides direction and assigns responsibilities to Assistant Coaches to ensure effective and consistent implementation of the athletic program.
17. Evaluates assigned coaching staff and provides required evaluations and performance information to the Athletic Director.
18. Follows all procedures, expectations, and protocols established by the District, Athletic Department, and Round Lake High School Coaches Handbook.
19. Maintains reliable attendance and availability and completes assigned responsibilities in a timely, organized, and professional manner consistent with District policy and the athletic schedule.
20. Performs other related duties as assigned.
