Brookings Register values integrity, clarity, and community connection in all reporting and editorial work. Role Description This full-time, on-site Editor role is based in Brookings, SD. The Editor will oversee the planning, review, and publication of news content, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to editorial standards. Day-to-day responsibilities include assigning stories, coordinating with reporters and photographers, editing articles and headlines, and guiding layout and presentation for print and online editions. The Editor will fact-check content, manage deadlines, maintain style consistency, and collaborate with other departments to support special sections and features. The role also involves contributing to editorial planning, identifying important local stories, and helping shape the overall voice and direction of the publication. Qualifications Strong editing and proofreading abilities, with attention to detail, grammar, and style. Experience in newsroom or publishing environments, including story assignment and content review. Ability to manage multiple deadlines, prioritize workload, and work effectively under time pressure. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with sound news judgment and ethical standards. Familiarity with AP style, digital publishing tools, and basic content management systems. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field, or equivalent experience. Demonstrated commitment to local journalism and community-focused reporting.
