Summary At the Indian Health Service (IHS), nurses deliver compassionate care. This position provides comprehensive care to obstetric/gynecology, labor & delivery inpatients and newborns. Responsibilities Provide professional nursing care in the obstetrical unit for patients in labor and delivery, postpartum, and for newborns from birth to discharge. Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans across antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, obstetrical triage, and newborn nursery services. Initiate pre‑planned emergency nursing interventions when a physician or midwife is not immediately available, including prep of OR, serving as circulating or scrub nurse, and performing newborn resuscitation. Administer prescribed therapeutic interventions, including medications, IV fluids, blood products, and other treatments per policy. Collaborate with physicians, certified nurse midwives, and interdisciplinary team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Obtain and maintain required certifications (BLS, ACLS, NRP, Fetal Monitoring). Requirements US citizenship required; selective service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959. Selected individual must obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges; loss of privileges results in removal. Position subject to rotating shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays). Shift rotations may vary from 8, 10, and 12‑hour shifts. Successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check. Set up direct deposit for payment. Background Investigation This position requires a federal background investigation. Applicants must complete all required background investigation forms within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Qualifications Applicants must have at least one year of specialized obstetrical nursing experience at a grade level below the desired federal grade (see required experience for GS‑07, GS‑09, and GS‑11). GS‑07 – Provide professional obstetrical nursing care under close supervision. GS‑09 – Provide obstetrical nursing care, develop individualized plans, monitor labor/fetal status, respond to emergencies. GS‑11 – Independently provide comprehensive obstetrical nursing care, manage unit flow, lead initiatives, serve as clinical resource. Education & Licensure Bachelor’s, associate degree, diploma, or higher level from an accredited professional nursing program. Pass the National Council Licensure Examination. Maintain an active, unrestricted nurse license or registration from a State, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory. Foreign nursing graduates: provide official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. Basic Requirements for Grade Levels GS‑5 – Bachelor’s degree in nursing with no experience or diploma/associate degree + 1 year experience. GS‑7 – Bachelor’s degree with success or plus one year experience; or diploma/associate degree + 2 years experience; or one year graduate education. GS‑9 – Master’s degree in professional nursing; or 1 year experience and bachelor’s/diploma/associate degree. GS‑11 – PhD or equivalent doctoral degree; or 1 year experience and bachelor’s/diploma/associate/master’s degree. Additional Information Eligible candidates may accrue credit for prior non‑federal experience and/or active duty uniformed service. This position may be covered by a bargaining unit. Government housing may be available depending on location. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized with a minimum six‑month service agreement.
