Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation and evaluation, provided to the women and newborns during the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal stages of the childbirth process. The L&D RN is responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care based on established clinical nursing care in the Labor and Delivery Department setting, including, but not limited to, providing labor support and education, monitoring maternal & fetal conditions, and monitoring the mother`s and baby`s vital signs during labor & birth, and managing a variety of potential issues that may arise. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. Serves as the Resource nurse role when oriented and as directed. Supports the organization's vision and mission. Utilizes knowledge of patient's age, developmental status, spiritual and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.

The Labor and Delivery RN provides direct care, communicates with physicians / Nurse Director / Co workers, as appropriate about changes in the patient's clinical situation including results of diagnostic studies and is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in situation or response to treatment.

Education, Experience, Training

One year of experience in Couplet care or Labor and Delivery is required.

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing certificate.

Must have a current California RN license upon hire and maintained.

BCLS, ACLS, NRP certifications through (AHA) is required upon hire.

Basic Fetal Monitoring certificate upon hire, if no current Intermediate/ Advanced Fetal Monitoring course.

Other certificates: Breastfeeding Training PT 1 & PT 2, and Intermediate/Advanced Fetal monitoring, within 6 months of hire.

Ability to practice leadership, interpersonal skills, communication skills, teamwork, quality improvement and excellent customer service, and professionalism.

Proficient in oral and written communication skills

Other languages preferred are Spanish and Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) speaking.

Responsibilities

Consistently uses two patient identifiers when drawing lab, administering medications and performing procedures.

Does not use unacceptable abbreviations in documentation, (using read back on all telephone orders.)

Consistently follows medication reconciliation policy.

Ensures Crash Cart, defibrillation function have been checked per protocol and after each code, appropriate items are immediately replaced and indicated by signature on crash cart checklist.

Is in compliance with information contained in the Infection Prevention and Control Manual ( i.e. OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards, CDC Guidelines ), and demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment ( i.e. gloves, gowns, masks, goggles ) and hand hygiene.

Adheres to purposeful rounding on all patients as per hospital policy.

Able to give thorough, detailed efficient change of shift bedside report to ensure consistency in the plan of care.

Assists physicians with special tests and procedures in the unit. Uses time out on all patients for any bedside procedures.

Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit/facility, i.e. suction and oxygen immediately available when needed.

Consistent with pain assessment and reassessment with the time frame after giving pain medications and upon discharge or transfer of patients.

Completes documentation of medications given to the patient on the medical record. Resolves any discrepancies in medication dispensing system.

Recognizes signs of abuse and reports appropriately.

Initiates discharge and patient / family education planning with proper documentation in the medical record.

Establishes priorities of patient care based on essential needs and available resources of time, equipment, personnel and supplies.

Formulates, maintains and updates a goal directed plan of care on patients which is prioritized and based on patient outcomes.

Performs other duties as assigned or required. Performs all initiatives to promote exclusive breastfeeding and skin-to-skin.
