The role is considered a generalist and spans the full range of software found in connected fitness products, from embedded firmware and device software to mobile, desktop, web, and cloud applications. The Software Engineer III owns PoCs or subsystems end to end and makes design decisions. This position requires a creative and flexible individual who can stretch to support the specific needs of the development situation and manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will be willing to move fast, fail early, iterate, and consistently deliver.This is a non-supervisory position.RESPONSIBILITIESUnderstand and integrate potential new technologies, features, modalities/ergonomics into Johnson productsDesign, implement, test, and debug software across the product stack, from embedded firmware to mobile, web, and cloud applicationsCreate proof-of-concepts (PoC) and partner with the Product Management team for review and refinementEvaluate and test for viability and risk mitigationFeed new product development by successfully and smoothly transitioning PoC’s to engineering teams based on Asia sourcing and manufacturingDevelop and document design and specificationsLead code reviewsContribute to new intellectual property and intellectual property workaroundsGuide and support junior engineersOther projects as assignedMarginal Job Functions:Other projects as needed.RequirementsEducation:Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or equivalent experienceRequired Experience:Typically, 5-8 years of professional software development experience, or equivalentProficiency in two or more programming languages such as C++, C#, Java, Kotlin, Python, or JavaScript/TypeScriptUnderstanding of object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and design patternsVersion control (i.e. Git)Write clear technical documentationAbility to pick up new languages and/or frameworks as needed for a given projectAbility to interact with, program, and debug physical hardwareApplication development in mobile (Android/iOS), desktop, or webContinuous integration/deployment (CI/CD)Basic networking knowledge (ports, sockets, REST)Bonus Qualifications:Exposure to embedded systems and development in C/C++Linux application development, driver development, and OS buildingAutomated testing and unit testingDevelopment in React native or React webExposure to cloud servicesExposure to machine learningExposure to single-board computers (i.e. Raspberry Pi)Other Requirements:Strong and creative problem-solving skillsAbility to work well with numerous diverse groups and individualsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsWillingness to travel internationally as needed; approximately 1-2 trips to Asia annuallyAbility to write code without AI assistanceAI co-development fluency (i.e. Claude Code, Codex, Copilot)PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENTPhysical RequirementsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, phone, and other standard office equipment.
