About this Job The Vice President of Nursing Practice Innovation provides leadership with the Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer (SVP & CNO) for the implementation, evaluation, and refinement of the MedStar Health nursing professional practice model. This role supports the entities in their Magnet Recognition and Pathways to Excellence journeys. The VP of Nursing Practice Innovation is accountable for developing clinical practice guidelines in conjunction with the system Nursing Practice Council and for leading clinical transformation through partnerships with the SVP & CNO, other nursing leaders, and leaders from other disciplines. The role standardizes evidence‑based nursing practice across the continuum of care, reduces variability, and provides system‑level oversight of the NDNQI and NICHE programs, including oversight of nursing sensitive outcome measures. Additionally, the VP directs supply evaluation and standardization in collaboration with nurses, other clinical disciplines, and purchasing leaders, driving nursing practice innovation while ensuring MedStar’s clinical practice guidelines achieve appropriate performance in the patient experience and value‑based purchasing. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Develops and contributes to the achievement of MedStar Health and corporate nursing established goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Ensures compliance with MedStar Health policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations. Provides system‑level direction and oversight for the NDNQI and NICHE programs. Oversees system‑level reporting of nursing sensitive outcome measures. Works with the Corporate Senior Vice President & CNO to develop specific objectives, expected outcomes, and metrics for practice innovation annually. Identifies opportunities for improving patient care delivery in collaboration with entity‑based nursing and other clinical leaders. Plans tests and evaluates innovative patient care delivery models that improve quality of care in a fiscally responsible manner, establishing, collecting, and evaluating metrics for evaluating new models. Develops care models with both nursing and medical leadership to provide patients with seamless care across the healthcare continuum. Utilizes existing evidence and contributes new evidence in developing new approaches to patient care. Maximizes technology use in creating new models of care. Stays abreast of innovative patient care delivery programs being tested and/or implemented across the country. Prepares grants for funding the design and evaluation of new models of care. Provides oversight for strategic initiatives within corporate nursing and in MedStar Health. Mentors clinical and nursing administration colleagues and provides expert consultation on nursing practice. Participates in meetings and committees, representing the department and business unit in community outreach efforts. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and maintains effective working relationships with other departments. Minimal Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in Nursing (required) Master's degree in Nursing (required) Doctoral degree preferred Experience 10+ years progressive leadership experience in academic medical centers and/or complex health systems (required) Licenses and Certifications RN – Registered Nurse – State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure RN licensure in Maryland and the District of Columbia (Upon Hire required) Professional certification preferred; upon Hire required CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Broad expertise in professional practice models and concepts Expert collaborative skills, quantitative and qualitative analytic skills, and a passion for executing complex, whole‑scale change projects.
