Position Summary

The Mechanical Superintendent (M8) is responsible for overseeing all mechanical operations on a project or multiple work areas, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards. This role emphasizes leadership, coordination, and accountability for multiple crews, subcontractors, and project resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversee mechanical crews including Foremen (M7), Lead Mechanics (M6), Journeymen (M5), Apprentices (M2–M4), and Helpers (M1)

• Coordinate project schedules, material deliveries, manpower, and equipment allocation

• Monitor project progress, ensuring adherence to drawings, specifications, codes, and quality standards

• Conduct and supervise pre-task planning, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and safety briefings for all crews

• Mentor Foremen and Lead Mechanics, providing guidance on leadership, technical skills, and safety compliance

• Ensure crews maintain proper documentation of work performed, hours, incidents, and safety reports

• Inspect mechanical systems and installations for quality assurance and compliance with project requirements

• Resolve project issues, technical challenges, or conflicts in coordination with project management

• Communicate project status, resource needs, and potential risks to Project Managers or higher-level supervision

• Enforce all company, client, and regulatory safety policies and procedures across all mechanical crews

• Investigate incidents, near misses, and non-compliance issues, ensuring corrective action is implemented

• Perform other duties consistent with superintendent-level responsibilities

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in mechanical trade leadership, including Foreman-level supervision

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple crews and complex projects effectively

• Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems, construction practices, and codes

• Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills

• Ability to make independent decisions while maintaining project and company standards

Required Certifications and Training

• OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety (or equivalent safety leadership training)

• Trade-specific certifications (e.g., welding, rigging, pressure systems) as required

• Jobsite-specific and company-required safety and project management training

• Supervisory or leadership courses preferred

Tools & Equipment

• Maintains personal hand tools for demonstration and limited hands-on work as needed

• Responsible for ensuring proper tool use, maintenance, and accountability across all crews

• Specialty tools, power tools, testing equipment, and consumables provided by the company

Experience

• Typically 10+ years of mechanical trade experience, including supervisory experience

• Proven track record of managing multi-crew projects successfully

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift 50–75 pounds occasionally

• Ability to walk, stand, climb, and move throughout the jobsite frequently

• Ability to work in confined spaces, elevated platforms, and around moving equipment

• Ability to work in varying environmental xhyhwjd conditions (hot, cold, wet, dusty, noisy)

• Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and fall protection

Work Environment

• Industrial and commercial construction jobsites

• Exposure to mechanical systems, construction hazards, and heavy equipment

• Indoor and outdoor work environments, including elevated and confined spaces

• Work hours may include nights, weekends, and overtime as required

Supervision

• Reports to Project Manager or Operations Manager (M9–M10)

• Directly supervises Foremen (M7), Lead Mechanics (M6), Journeymen (M5), Apprentices (M2–M4), and Helpers (M1)

Safety Expectations

• Serve as the project safety leader for mechanical operations

• Ensure all crews comply with company, client, and regulatory safety policies

• Conduct pre-task planning, hazard recognition, and ensure stop-work authority is exercised when necessary

• Mentor Foremen and crews on safety best practices and regulatory compliance
