Financial Counselor
The Financial Counselor assists patients and their families with a host of services to ensure that the process of collecting payments is fully explained and as comfortable as possible. Responsibilities include understanding the importance of providing exemplary customer service, demonstrating a positive and professional approach, efficiently gathering and inputting patient demographic and financial information, contacting primary care or admitting physicians to obtain authorizations, diagnosis, and procedure details, explaining necessary forms and obtaining signatures, contacting appropriate payers to verify benefits and obtain necessary authorizations, explaining insurance benefits and collecting co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay portions due, collecting for related professional care when appropriate, documenting authorization and benefit information in the registration system, assembling patient records and obtaining copies of relevant documents, demonstrating a basic knowledge of third party reimbursement requirements and regulations, exhibiting competency in the use of all registration systems, electronic verification tools, and web-based resources, following Patient Financial Services self-pay policies, performing basic individual cashiering functions, collecting and inventorying patient valuables following policy guidelines, maintaining a basic understanding of the medical necessity screening process and appropriate systems, performing appropriate pre-registration functions, maintaining departmental logs for statistical reporting, consistently meeting Quality Assurance standards, meeting departmental goals regarding collections, productivity, and customer service, maintaining flexibility in work schedule availability, meeting federal, state, and hospital requirements related to compliance issues, maintaining reasonably regular, punctual attendance, maintaining compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures, attending and participating in department staff meetings, reviewing and adhering to all Patient Financial Services and departmental education initiatives, meeting all corporate and Patient Financial Services annual recertification and education requirements, and assisting his/her manager in planning and organizing department activities.
Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of Patient Financial Services Orientation program and annual educational requirements, two years' experience in a financial, business office, or customer service environment, proficiency in Windows Microsoft Office-based products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), typing proficiency, and one year PC/Windows experience.
