TELEMEDICINE NURSE
Mt. Olive Family Medicine Center, Inc.
Position Summary
The Telemedicine Nurse is responsible for the daily coordination, management, and oversight of Mt. Olive Family Medicine Center’s telemedicine program. This position ensures that telemedicine services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the standards of Mt. Olive Family Medicine Center, applicable nursing standards, and organizational policies.
The Telemedicine Nurse serves as the primary nursing resource for telemedicine operations and works closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, administrative staff, and patients to ensure a seamless virtual care experience.
The position requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, technological competency, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a patient-centered approach to care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Telemedicine Program Management
- Oversee the daily operations of the telemedicine program.
- Coordinate telemedicine patient scheduling, intake, rooming, and follow-up processes.
- Monitor patient flow to ensure timely and efficient virtual visits.
- Identify operational problems and develop solutions to improve patient access and workflow.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining telemedicine policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Ensure telemedicine services are integrated appropriately with the clinic’s in-person services.
- Monitor telemedicine volume, utilization, and patient access.
- Identify opportunities to expand or improve telemedicine services based on patient and community needs.
Clinical Nursing Responsibilities
- Perform appropriate nursing assessment and triage of telemedicine patients within the nurse's scope of practice.
- Obtain and document vital signs, medication information, symptoms, and other pertinent clinical information as appropriate.
- Determine the appropriate level of care and escalate concerns to the provider when necessary.
- Recognize urgent or emergent symptoms and follow established procedures for appropriate referral or emergency care.
- Assist providers with the clinical components of virtual visits.
- Provide patient education and instructions related to diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
- Coordinate laboratory, imaging, referrals, prescriptions, and other follow-up needs resulting from telemedicine visits.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
Technology and Telemedicine Platform
- Serve as the primary clinical resource for the clinic’s telemedicine platform.
- Assist patients and staff with basic telemedicine technology and troubleshooting.
- Ensure patients understand how to connect to their virtual visit.
- Monitor the patient experience from connection through completion of the visit.
- Work with appropriate staff or vendors to resolve recurring technology issues.
- Stay current with changes and updates to telemedicine technology and workflows.
WALK-IN CLINIC RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to managing the telemedicine program, the Telemedicine Nurse will provide clinical nursing support in the Mt. Olive Family Medicine Center Walk-In Clinic as needed. Responsibilities include:
- Provide nursing coverage and clinical support for the Walk-In Clinic.
- Assist with the daily operation and patient flow of the Walk-In Clinic.
- Perform nursing assessments and obtain appropriate vital signs, medical history, medication information, and presenting symptoms.
- Triage patients according to the nature and urgency of their complaints and determine the appropriate level of care within the nurse's scope of practice.
- Prepare patients for evaluation by the physician or advanced practice provider.
- Assist providers with examinations, procedures, treatments, and other clinical needs.
- Perform nursing procedures within the scope of practice and according to clinic policies and protocols.
- Administer medications and injections as ordered.
- Collect and process laboratory specimens and perform appropriate point-of-care testing.
- Assist with wound care, dressing changes, nebulizer treatments, injections, and other routine outpatient procedures as ordered.
- Assist with EKGs, diagnostic testing, and preparation of patients for imaging or other services when appropriate.
- Recognize patients with potentially serious or emergent conditions and immediately notify the provider and follow established emergency procedures.
- Provide patient education regarding medications, treatment plans, home care, follow-up appointments, and when to seek additional medical attention.
- Coordinate referrals, prescriptions, laboratory testing, imaging, and follow-up care as directed by the provider.
- Assist with management of patient messages, telephone calls, medication requests, and other nursing-related communications.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all nursing care in the electronic medical record.
- Monitor patient flow and communicate delays, concerns, or changes in patient condition to the provider and appropriate staff.
- Assist with maintaining adequate clinical supplies and equipment in the Walk-In Clinic.
- Ensure examination rooms and clinical areas are properly stocked, clean, and prepared for patient care.
- Assist with infection prevention and control procedures and maintain compliance with clinic policies.
- Provide professional, compassionate, and respectful care to all patients regardless of the reason for the visit or ability to pay.
- Work collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical assistants, and front-office staff to provide efficient patient care.
- Assist with training and mentoring nursing and clinical support staff as appropriate.
- Serve as a clinical resource to other nursing staff working in the Walk-In Clinic.
- Assist with coverage of other clinical areas of the practice when necessary.
- Perform other nursing and clinical duties as assigned by the Practice Administrator or Medical Director.
Qualifications
Required
- Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of North Carolina.
- Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience, preferably in primary care, ambulatory care, or a similar outpatient setting.
- Strong clinical assessment and triage skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and make appropriate clinical decisions within scope of practice.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and computer technology.
- Ability to learn and effectively use telemedicine technology.
- Commitment to patient-centered care and confidentiality.
