RECREATION SPECIALIST (REACH Program)

Recreation Specialist – Part‑time (REACH Program) Are you passionate about making a difference through inclusive recreation and community programs? The City of Rancho Palos Verdes invites you to join our Recreation & Parks Department as a part‑time Recreation Specialist. In this role you will coordinate adapted recreational programs for adults and young adults with developmental disabilities, ensuring safe, efficient, and enjoyable activities that meet community needs. Responsibilities Plan, organize, and facilitate adapted recreational and social activities—including arts and crafts, music, dance, sports, field trips, and special events—for REACH participants. Manage facilities and equipment: open, close, inspect, and maintain program spaces; ensure supplies and materials are properly stored. Provide participant support by fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment that promotes independence, positive social interaction, and safety. Guide part‑time staff and volunteers; assist with recruitment, training, and scheduling as needed. Act as a City representative and deliver excellent customer service to participants, families, and the public. Assist with event logistics: set up, operate, supervise, and break down activities. Conduct safety inspections, monitor program activities, and document incidents such as injuries, behavioral issues, vandalism, and property damage. Develop marketing and outreach materials—flyers, newsletters, social media content—to promote activities. Support financial and administrative tasks: monitor budget, manage petty cash, issue purchase orders, and produce financial reports; update the City’s website, ActiveNet, and quarterly newsletters. Administer basic first aid and CPR for adults/children as needed. Perform additional duties as assigned. Ryan Community Park – grounds and community center Ladera Linda Community Park – grounds and community center Eastview Grounds – dog park REACH therapeutic recreation program for young adults, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy, Adapted Physical Education, Special Education, Occupational Therapy, or related field preferred. At least two years of relevant experience in recreation, education, therapeutic recreation, or community services. Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is highly desirable. Strong understanding of recreation program planning and adapted activities, along with safety and emergency response procedures. Good customer‑service skills and ability to engage participants, families, staff, and volunteers. Ability to work a variable schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and move tables, chairs, and other equipment for event setup. Must successfully pass a background check and possess a valid California driver’s license. Licenses & Certificates American Red Cross First Aid certificate. CPR certificate (infant, child, and adult) within 30 days of hire. Work Schedule Part‑time, year‑round, at‑will position of up to 28 hours per week. Scheduled hours will not exceed 1,560 hours within a one‑year period. Variable schedule—days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
