Building Inspector

WE ARE HIRING! Join our team and become our new full-time BUILDING INSPECTOR in the Community Development Department. Reporting to the Director of Community Development or their designee, this position performs professional inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to ensure compliance with adopted building, fire, and property maintenance codes. The Building Inspector reviews construction projects, investigates complaints, interprets applicable codes, and works collaboratively with residents, contractors, and Village staff to promote safe, high-quality development throughout the Village. Some info about the position… Performs inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings during construction to verify compliance with approved plans, adopted codes, and permit requirements; recommends issuance of Certificates of Occupancy. Reviews construction plans and permit documents for code compliance; identifies deficiencies and provides direction on corrective action, applying adopted International Codes and Village ordinances. Investigates complaints involving building, zoning, and property maintenance violations; documents findings through reports and inspection software, and issues notices of violation and correction orders as necessary. Represents the Community Development Department in assisting residents, contractors, and developers; coordinates inspection activities with other Village departments and assists with updating departmental procedures. Administers the Village's rodent control program and enforces regulations covering abandoned vehicles, refuse, and yard maintenance; maintains accurate inspection records and prepares related reports. Qualified candidates should… Hold a high school diploma or equivalent, plus a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building construction, inspection, or code enforcement (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered). Possess ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification (required); additional ICC certifications are highly desirable, and Structural Pest Control Technician certification is encouraged but not required. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of adopted International Building Codes, Property Maintenance Codes, accessibility standards, and modern construction methods, materials, and practices. Interpret architectural and engineering plans, identify unsafe construction practices and code deficiencies, and communicate findings clearly with contractors, developers, and residents. Maintain a valid Illinois driver's license with an acceptable driving record, and demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office, permitting software, and electronic inspection technology. Starting pay rate for all new hires is $46.49 per hour (the full pay range is $46.49-$60.82 per hour) as determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Typical hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional overtime, evening, and weekend hours. Paid leave. Health insurance.
