Asst coach $3500 Summary of Position Position is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. Position motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport. Establishes good relationships with students, parents and other staff members. This position will assist the head coach. Minimum Qualifications Education – GED or higher High School Varsity or Collegiate level experience as an athlete or coach. High School head coaching, college head coaching and/or college assistant coaching experience preferred. Criminal Background Check – A national, state and local criminal records and sex‑offender registry check will be obtained and approved by Duneland before an offer will be made. Principal Responsibilities and Duties Hold organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate in the sport. Assess students’ skills and assign team positions. Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development. Work with the athletic director in scheduling facilities for practices and competition. Assign duties to an assistant coach as necessary. Coach and instruct students, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport. Observe students during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement. Determine game strategy based on the team's capabilities. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and provide proper supervision of athletes at all times. Monitor the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met and encourage student athletes to maintain a high academic standard. Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury. Conference with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their students. Follow National Federation, IHSAA, Duneland Athletic Conference, Duneland School Corporation, and Chesterton Middle School regulations governing the athletic program. Model sports‑like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards students, officials, and spectators. Act as a team representative and promote the sport by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations. Follow established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms. Work with the athletic director to develop a policy for awards and submit a list of award winners at the end of the season. Participate in special activities to include parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies. Maintain eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment, inventory, and other related records. Do not leave the athletic premises until all athletes have gone home or been picked up by their parents. Unless an emergency exists, coaches are not required to give rides to athletes. Coaches are subject to being evaluated by the athletic director and/or administration. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics Demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with persons at all levels to develop and maintain productive relationships with all publics. Ability to learn new skills quickly and assimilate into daily work. Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality both inside and outside the corporation. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Ability to multi‑task with attention to detail. Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes of the normal day and expectations. Proficiency in the use of all technology for the sport and record keeping (e.g., computers, copiers). Proficiency in the use of and the ability to learn required instructional software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Docs). Demonstrate organizational and time‑management skills. Perform all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisors and district administrators. Hours: There are regular after‑school, evening and weekend activity hours. In season, pre‑season and post‑season activities are required and expected. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
