General Manager

Black Star Bakery & Cafe is an established and growing NYC bakery-café brand with five locations across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. We are known for exceptional coffee, a large selection of pastries baked throughout the day, efficient service, and welcoming neighborhood cafés.

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Multi-Unit General Manager to lead daily operations across all five locations.

This is a field-based leadership position reporting directly to the owners. The successful candidate will be regularly present in our stores, directly managing employees and designated keyholders. This is not a desk-based or advisory role.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

* Oversee daily operations across all five NYC locations.
* Directly lead, coach, train, and hold store employees and keyholders accountable.
* Prepare and manage weekly schedules across all locations.
* Adjust staffing based on business needs while controlling labor hours and overtime.
* Recruit, interview, onboard, train, and evaluate employees.
* Make hiring, disciplinary, and termination recommendations, with final approval from ownership.
* Develop dependable keyholders and ensure reliable opening and closing coverage.
* Conduct frequent store visits during opening, peak, and closing periods when necessary.
* Maintain consistent standards for customer service, cleanliness, food safety, product presentation, and brand execution.
* Oversee inventory, ordering, product availability, pastry production levels, and waste control.
* Review POS and operational reports to identify problems and make timely decisions.
* Monitor attendance, punctuality, employee performance, and training completion.
* Ensure compliance with NYC health, safety, food-handling, and labor requirements.
* Resolve staffing and operational issues before they require owner involvement.
* Provide ownership with concise updates, accurate reporting, and clear action plans.
* Create greater consistency, efficiency, and accountability across all five locations.
* Support future store openings and continued company growth.

WHAT YOU BRING

* Minimum of four years of direct multi-unit leadership experience.
* Direct experience overseeing at least four food-service, café, bakery, fast-casual, or hospitality locations simultaneously is required.
* Experience directly overseeing staffing, scheduling, labor hours, overtime, inventory, waste, and operational standards.
* Proven ability to manage store teams and develop dependable keyholders or shift leaders.
* Strong understanding of high-volume café, bakery, fast-casual, or restaurant operations.
* Strong knowledge of labor and food-cost controls, operational reporting, and budgeting.
* Ability to provide specific and verifiable examples of operational improvements.
* Strong judgment, organization, follow-through, and real-time problem-solving skills.
* Comfortable working directly with owners in a growing, hands-on business.
* Must be mobile and able to travel regularly between Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.
* Flexible availability, including early mornings, weekends, and occasional closing periods when operationally necessary.
* Legally authorized to work in the United States.

Experience with new store openings, POS reporting, NYC Department of Health requirements, and multi-location bakery or café operations is strongly preferred.
