Associate Director, Accounting (Hybrid)

Associate Director Accounting The Associate Director Accounting is part of the team responsible for the day‑to‑day operations and management of the Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS) Accounting department, specifically responsible for the day‑to‑day accounting activities related to the physician organization entities of BUMG and BMCAP. This role oversees assigned components of the month‑end close, general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, and internal financial analysis, and manages a team of accountants to ensure the integrity of the financial statements in accordance with GAAP. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES Coordinate and control the BMC Health System accounting functions, including monthly close, GL account reconciliations, and accurate, timely financial reporting. Support the month‑end and year‑end close processes of BMCHS accounting functions by coordinating assigned journal entries, reconciliations, variance reviews, and preparing or reviewing supporting financial schedules. Oversee selected operational accounting areas—such as general ledger activity, accruals, non‑patient receivables, payroll inputs, intercompany activity, and cash receipts—to ensure accuracy, proper controls, and timely issue resolution. Reconcile all balance sheet accounts in a timely manner and use a risk‑based approach to prioritize high‑risk accounts such as Cash and Accounts Receivable. Ensure that staff prepare reconciliations and that variances and outstanding items are resolved promptly. Improve close workflows and accounting processes by identifying system improvements and efficiencies, enhancing controls, and supporting audit and year‑end reporting requirements. Develop and implement internal accounting policies, procedures, and controls under the direction of the Assistant Controller and Controller. Identify and inform the Assistant Controller of risks or operational issues discovered during close activities. CROSS‑FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION Collaborate with Finance, FIS, HRIS, RCM, Clinical Operations, and entity finance teams to ensure accurate financial data flow and consistent monthly reporting. Support budgeting and forecasting by providing historical analysis and financial insights. Partner with FIS on general ledger updates, system changes, and process improvements to strengthen financial workflows and accounting accuracy. Provide support and clarification on accounting treatment and reporting considerations to Finance and operational leadership. Assist in implementing accounting structures for new entities or updated requirements in partnership with other leadership groups. TEAM LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT Recruit, hire, and onboard a motivated accounting team, encouraging members to obtain CPA designation when appropriate. Coach, guide, and provide day‑to‑day support to accounting managers and staff, fostering performance, professional growth, and effective team operations. Set goals, clarify expectations, and support accountability within assigned functional areas. Maintain a positive, collaborative, and inclusive work environment through training, cross‑training, and ongoing skill development. SOX AND TECHNICAL Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and applicable healthcare and regulatory accounting requirements. Assist in developing and maintaining internal controls to safeguard assets, ensure data accuracy, and support reliable financial reporting. Support internal and external audit activities to ensure timely and accurate audit outcomes. Maintain current knowledge of relevant accounting standards and emerging technical issues, applying correct accounting treatment and promoting continuous professional development. OTHER Assist the Assistant Controller with special projects such as system enhancements, regulatory changes, and organizational initiatives. Utilize BMC Health System’s values as the basis for decision making. JOB REQUIREMENTS BA/BS in Accounting or a related degree. 8+ years of experience, including 4–6 years of supervisory experience in an accounting environment within a non‑profit or equivalent setting. PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE MBA or Master’s degree in Finance or Accounting. Experience supporting Finance and Accounting for a physician organization.

Superior experience on General Ledger systems (Infor preferred) and proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to function in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment and handle multiple priorities with strong organizational skills. Strong analytical skills and solid working knowledge of U.S. GAAP. Proven ability to build relationships and focus on client service. Demonstrated ability to own processes, identify issues and improvement opportunities, and implement improvements. COMPENSATION RANGE $122,000.00 – $177,000.00, based on the minimum job qualifications.
