Paralegal I
A Public Trust clearance or ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance is required for this position
Analyze legal impact of legislative developments and administrative and judicial decisions, opinions, determinations, and rulings on Agency programs. Identify and analyze significant facts, formulating legal issues to be researched, researching issues presented and other similar legal analysis and research. Conduct research for the preparation of legal opinions on matters of interest to the Agency. Perform substantive legal analysis of requests for information under the provisions of various acts, or other similar legal support functions which require discretion and independent judgment in the application of a specialized knowledge of laws, precedent decisions, regulations, Agency policies and practices, and judicial or administrative proceedings.

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Paralegal I: 26.88
Pay commensurate with experience.

Paralegal I Responsibilities Include:
· Legal research - Using a basic knowledge of the application of a body of law, regulations, precedents, and practices covering one or more recurring types of legal actions, performs research, evaluation, and analysis of a variety of routine legal topics and points of law. Using multiple online legal systems, research references such as agency manuals, directives, issuances, court reports, appellate records, or commercial legal publications to locate appropriate data such as applicable precedents, legislative history and commentaries which bear on legal issues. Independently analyzes both issues of
fact and issues of law to prepare digests of case decisions and evaluate the applicability of precedents. Determines which statutes, regulations, cases, procedures and/or policies need to be researched and assembled, prepares initial summary, and makes recommendations as to appropriateness of datal Organizes and prepares research material and determines information that is pertinent to the case. Research assists in the development of cases and is predicated on facts derived from a review of case information, requests from AUSAs and a review of documentary evidence or facts. Performs basic legal analysis of routine requests for information. Prepares indices of legal and administrative material.
· Legal writing - Following established USAO precedents, drafts initial legal and administrative briefs, motions, oppositions to defense motions and correspondence for AUSA review. Prepares documents that summarize and explain case files, depositions, or interrogatories. Analyzes information, identifies missing information that requires additional research or investigation and identifies the appropriate reference source. Drafts legal documents that identify the legal or factual issues in the case, locate precedents and develop legally supportable conclusions. Uses considerable judgment in interpreting and adapting guidelines to draft correspondence and legal documents that accurately summarize information. Reviews, proofreads, and edits legal documents. Verifies citations and statutory references against original sources.
· Preparation and management of evidence and discovery - Prepares and organizes documentation and evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial. Identifies and locates missing information. Reviews administrative records and discovery production for privileged content and other content for redaction. Effectively organizes data and develops trial exhibits such as statistical charts, graphs, and timelines to be presented in court. Manages discovery and evidence in electronic and hard copy formats and may present the exhibits using trial presentation software in court. Maintains evidence such as paper documents, PDF files, image files, audio files, video files, bank records, forensic reports, and other file types. Provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations. Utilizes various software applications and graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters. Provides technical support, such as enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits.
· Case support - Participates in pre-trial witness conferences, noting any deficiencies in case materials (e. g. , missing documents, conflicting statements) and additional issues or other matters requiring investigation prior to trial. As required, prepares, and organizes trial exhibits, documents, memoranda, reports, and correspondence relating to cases for review by AUSAs. Selects and interprets the pertinent guidelines and policies that govern work assignments. May assist AUSAs in court during hearings and trials. Compiles case files for AUSAs and coordinates with appropriate points of contact to obtain copies of all documentation pertinent to the case or claim. Examines and evaluates routine information in case files, following agency standards regarding case litigation worthiness and appropriate titles of law. Maintains current and historical files and prepares any necessary correspondence regarding same.
· Receives written and oral requests for assistance from individuals from both USAO staff and from other governmental agencies. Some assignments may require the employee to interact with opposing counsel regarding the correctness of information, technical issues, or procedural requirements. Performs other job-related duties as assigned

· Basic written, communication, and computer skills.
· Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, confidence, and integrity while directly dealing with internal and external customers
· Ability to prioritize work and successfully meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
