About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Ortho-Neuro - Med Surg Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12 Hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 Hours Experience: Minimum of 2 Years License: Required Certifications: BLS (AHA) Must-Have: - Experience with orthopedic patients - Experience with PCA pumps Description: Unit has 33 beds, all private rooms. Patient-to-nurse ratio is 1 to 6. Common diagnoses include elective surgeries for hips, knees, and shoulders, as well as fractures from falls, back and neck surgeries, and general medical-surgical cases. RNs are not required to titrate drips. Common titratable fluids include IV fluids and PCA pumps. Charge Nurse is present 24/7. Day charge nurse may take patients if necessary, while night charge typically has a full patient assignment. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist on the unit. Four PCTs are aimed for if the unit is full, but often there are three or two depending on staffing levels. PCT duties include vital signs, fingerstick blood sugar checks, assistance with activities of daily living, and the ability to discontinue Foley catheters. Respiratory equipment including CPAP, BiPAP, and High Flow are managed by respiratory therapy. Remote telemetry is available if needed, monitored by a different floor. RNs do not have to read telemetry strips. Shifts are 0700-1930 or 1900-0730 with a half-hour lunch break. Permanent staff self-schedule, and travelers will be scheduled based on unit needs. Block scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are satisfied. Every other weekend is required for scheduling. Weekend shifts for days are Saturday and Sunday. Holiday shifts depend on unit needs; travelers may be asked to work holidays if there are not enough permanent staff. Travelers are the first to float as necessary to any Med Surg units. Travelers floated to telemetry will be assigned patients within their skillset. Scrubs required are royal blue, with specific guidelines regarding jackets. One day of specific orientation followed by one day on the floor with a preceptor. After three days, the traveler works independently. Cancellation policy allows for two shift cancellations per 13-week assignment. Charting system in use is EPIC.
