DEAN OF STUDENTS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

Position SummaryThe Dean of Students - Middle School is responsible for student discipline, behavior support, and the overall culture and climate of the Middle School division. The Dean serves as a key point of contact for students, families, and faculty on matters of conduct, social-emotional wellbeing, and community expectations, working closely with the Division Head, School Counselor, and teaching staff to foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive bilingual learning environment. The Dean works within the framework and priorities established by the Head of Middle School.Given FASNY's bilingual program, the Dean must be able to communicate fluently and confidently with students and families in both French and English, as a meaningful portion of the school community is more comfortable in one language than the other.Key ResponsibilitiesStudent Culture & DisciplineOversee day-to-day student behavior management, including investigating incidents, determining appropriate consequences, and following up with students, families, and staffMaintain consistent, developmentally appropriate disciplinary practices aligned with the Student/Family HandbookTrack and document behavioral incidents; identify patterns and recommend proactive interventionsPartner with the School Counselor on students requiring additional social-emotional supportCommunity & Culture BuildingChampion a positive, inclusive Middle School culture consistent with FASNY's bilingual, bicultural missionCoordinate student leadership programs, support the advisory program, and lead community-building initiativesSupport student behavior and safety during Middle School events, assemblies, and tripsFamily & Faculty CommunicationCommunicate clearly and empathetically with families in French and/or English depending on family preference, both verbally and in writingServe as a liaison between families and the Division Head on behavioral and disciplinary mattersCollaborate with teachers and advisors to support consistent expectations across classroomsCompliance & SafeguardingEnsure disciplinary practices comply with school policy and applicable NYS regulationsSupport mandatory reporting obligations and safeguarding protocols as neededMaintain accurate, confidential student records related to conduct and interventionsQualificationsBachelor's degree required; Master's in Education, School Counseling, or related field preferredMinimum 3–5 years of experience in middle school educationAbility to teach across multiple middle school subject areas as neededFull professional fluency in both French and English required, spoken and written; ability to communicate effectively with students and families regardless of their dominant languageStrong understanding of adolescent development and restorative/positive discipline approachesExcellent interpersonal, conflict-resolution, and written communication skills in both languagesExperience in an independent, international, or bilingual school setting strongly preferredFamiliarity with French educational culture/system a plusKey AttributesCalm, fair, and consistent under pressureWarm but firm with students; builds trust easily across cultures and languagesHighly organized, discreet, and comfortable handling sensitive/confidential mattersCollaborative team player who partners well with faculty, counseling, and administrationFASNY provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation and training.As an international community and in line with our equity goals, FASNY commits to recruiting students and faculty that represent a range of backgrounds, identities and perspectives.
