Position Overview:
The Medical Assistant/Orthopedic Technician supports providers in delivering efficient, high-quality patient care by preparing patients, performing clinical tasks, and maintaining accurate documentation. This role assists with orthopedic procedures, including casting, splinting, and basic wound care, while ensuring clinic flow and readiness. Strong communication and adherence to clinical protocols and HIPAA standards are essential. Position Highlights:
Key Responsibilities:
• Prepare patients for orthopedic examinations, procedures, and treatments by obtaining and documenting vital signs, patient history updates, medication reconciliation, injury details, chief complaints, and other relevant clinical information in the electronic medical record.
• Assist providers with orthopedic examinations, fracture care, casting, splinting, brace fittings, wound care, injections, aspirations, fracture reductions, and other orthopedic procedures performed within the clinic setting.
• Apply, remove, and educate patients regarding casts, splints, braces, slings, immobilizers, crutches, walkers, compression devices, and other durable medical equipment (DME) utilized in orthopedic care.
• Demonstrate knowledge of orthopedic instruments, supplies, braces, casting materials, splinting materials, injection supplies, sterile procedure setup, and orthopedic equipment utilized in outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine care.
• Prepare and maintain exam and procedure rooms for orthopedic visits and procedures, including fracture care, joint injections, aspirations, casting procedures, PRP injections, hyaluronic acid (HA) injections, corticosteroid injections, suture/staple removal, and wound care procedures.
• Assist with preparation of injection materials and sterile supplies for platelet-rich plasma (PRP), hyaluronic acid (HA), corticosteroid, and other orthopedic injections as directed by the provider.
• Perform basic wound care including dressing changes, suture removal, staple removal, wound cleansing, and application of wound care materials as directed by providers.
• Assist with obtaining and documenting orthopedic-specific measurements, including height, weight, range of motion, pain scores, injury details, brace sizing, and extremity assessments as appropriate.
• Support pre-operative and post-operative orthopedic patient care needs, including patient education, dressing care instructions, mobility precautions, brace usage, rehabilitation guidance, and coordination of follow-up appointments and imaging.
• Recognize urgent or emergent orthopedic concerns and communicate promptly with providers to support timely patient care and intervention.
• Demonstrate efficiency and accuracy in patient rooming, clinical preparation, and workflow management while maintaining quality patient care in a fast-paced orthopedic specialty clinic environment.
• Anticipate provider and patient care needs during orthopedic procedures and clinic visits to support efficient patient throughput and positive patient experiences.
• Coordinate patient care needs including imaging, referrals, prior authorizations, durable medical equipment (DME), surgical scheduling support, therapy coordination, diagnostic testing, and follow-up appointments.
• Place imaging and DME orders per provider protocol and organizational guidelines.
• Ensure all imaging results, operative reports, therapy notes, consult notes, and other relevant documentation are available and accessible in the electronic medical record prior to patient appointments.
• Handle telephone and EMR portal messages and communicate effectively with patients, pharmacies, imaging centers, therapy providers, surgical teams, and outside healthcare organizations to support continuity of care.
• Maintain inventory and stock of orthopedic supplies, braces, splinting materials, casting supplies, injection materials, wound care products, sterile supplies, and exam room equipment.
• Monitor and maintain logs for refrigerator temperatures, medications, sterilization processes, and expired medications/supplies in accordance with regulatory standards and organizational policy.
• Maintain cleanliness, proper sterilization, and organization of orthopedic instruments, procedure equipment, and clinical supplies.
• Support front office workflows as needed, including patient registration, scheduling, insurance verification, check-in/check-out functions, referral coordination, and prior authorization processes.
• Maintain professionalism, patient confidentiality, and compassionate care while supporting patients with orthopedic injuries, chronic musculoskeletal conditions, sports medicine needs, and post-operative recovery.
• Obtain and maintain appropriate radiologic/X-ray training and/or certification, as required by North Carolina regulations and organizational policy, to perform limited diagnostic X-rays within the orthopedic clinic setting within 12 months of hire.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by the Practice Manager, Department Director, or provider leadership. Medical Assistant Advancement Granville Health System promotes and encourages the advancement of Medical Assistants. Medical Assistant advancement is tailored to support professional growth, while aiming to acknowledge individuals who excel in enhancing clinical practice(s). Medical Assistant advancement consists of three levels as follows: Medical Assistant Level I
• Completion of a process improvement initiative utilizing the SMART goal framework. It is a requirement to complete a process improvement initiative every 12-months. Medical Assistant Level II
• Meet the requirement of Level I, in addition to:
• Cross-training proficiency and coverage support. It is a requirement to complete cross-training competency every 12-months. Medical Assistant Level III
• Meet the requirements of Level II, in addition to:
• Certification as a Medical Assistant from one of the following accredited organizations: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Health Career Association (NHA-CCMA), National Association of Health Professionals (NRCMA), or National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA). Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED required; must be a graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
• Orthopedic Technologist Certification (NBCOT or equivalent)
• Proficient in typing and computer skills; adept at operating office equipment.
• Possesses excellent communication, written, and organizational skills.
• Capable of multitasking efficiently and prioritizing tasks effectively.
• Adaptable to new tasks and environments; quick to incorporate new information.
• Exhibits sound judgment and problem-solving abilities.
• Demonstrates composure and maintains a calm demeanor, especially in emergency situations.
