RN - Med Surg

Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital is seeking a Registered Nurse for PRN shifts Nights & Weekends, some mornings. The RN will provide direct and indirect patient care in the medical-surgical setting. Communicates with physicians and co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient’s clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Essential Functions Perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes geriatric and the general patient population. Adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilize appropriate pain management techniques. Educate the patient and family regarding pain management. Revise plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness. Perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory’s and the resident care unit’s policies and procedures. Interpret results of waived tests; take appropriate action on waived tests results. Perform patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age. Perform treatments and provide services to level of licensure. Follow the seven (7) medication rights and reduce the potential for medication errors. (7 Rights: medication, patient, dose, time, route, reason, documentation). Formulate a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluate effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate. Assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills. Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identify and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Function as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers. Interact professionally with patient/family and involve patient/family in the formation of the plan of care. Interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group. Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Support and maintain a culture of safety and quality. Consult other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs. Communicate appropriately and clearly to the Director of Nursing, House Supervisors, co-workers and physicians. Maintain a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments. Identify and address psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicate with Case Manager/Discharge Planner regarding both in hospital and post discharge needs. Ensure documentation meets current standards and policies. Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly. Coordinate and supervise patient care as necessary. Work at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with leadership, physicians, other departments and peers. Professional Requirements Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. Complete annual education requirements. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. Wear BCMS issued identification badge while on duty. Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations. Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times. Comply with all organizational policies and standards regarding ethical business practices. Communicate the mission, ethics and goals of the organization. Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. Qualifications Current licensure as RN in Florida. Current BLS certification. ACLS within 6 months, maintain current thereafter. Emergency Department and/or Medical Surgical Nursing experience, preferred. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, preferred. Professional certification in Nursing, preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition. Must possess high-degree of resourcefulness as it relates to a thorough knowledge of hospital management principles and practices. Strong interpersonal skills including effective communication, both oral and written Proven professional judgment and decision-making skills with the ability to determine appropriate course of action in complex situations. Work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude. Manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and prioritize scheduling of work. Maintain confidentiality of all staff, medical, financial, and/or legal related information. Complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
