Description
For more than 16 years, Roca has built a strong presence in Western Massachusetts, working alongside young people, families, public-safety partners, community organizations, and local leaders across Springfield, Holyoke, and surrounding communities. The Director will be based at Roca's newly renovated Springfield site, designed to support strong programming, partnerships, and staff collaboration. This role offers the opportunity to lead an established and respected regional operation, build on a strong foundation of staff and partnerships, and shape the next chapter of Roca's work in Western Massachusetts.
This is a significant senior leadership opportunity for a mission-driven leader ready to guide high-performing teams serving young adults most impacted by urban violence. As Roca's senior leader for the Springfield and Holyoke sites, this role leads a team of approximately 20 staff and is responsible for the people, culture, safety, performance, operations, and external partnerships that drive regional impact. The Director of Roca Western Massachusetts reports to the Executive Vice President of New England and leads the implementation of Roca's Intervention Model across Springfield, Holyoke, and surrounding communities, including outreach, Rewire CBT delivery, employment pathways, reentry coordination, and data integrity.
The Director of Roca Western Massachusetts serves as the region's visible and decisive site leader: modeling Roca's values, strengthening disciplined operations, maintaining a strong culture of safety and accountability, and representing Roca with public-safety, justice-system, community, and funding partners across Western Massachusetts. This role offers the opportunity to make a measurable difference in community safety and in the lives of young adults at the center of urban violence. The Director will inherit a strong regional foundation and will be expected to strengthen staff, deepen partnerships, drive performance, and help shape Roca's next chapter in Western Massachusetts.
Core Responsibilities
- Own implementation, fidelity, and performance of Roca's Intervention Model across Springfield and Holyoke, aligning outreach, engagement, Rewire CBT practice, employment, reentry, stabilization services, and participant outcomes
- Lead and develop site managers, including Assistant Directors, Youth Worker Supervisors, Employment leadership, and other assigned managers, through clear expectations, coaching, and performance accountability.
- Strengthen site culture by modeling Roca's values, reinforcing professionalism and urgency, addressing performance issues directly, and building staff accountability and support.
- Lead site safety by overseeing crisis response, critical incidents, risk mitigation, violence prevention, and consistent adherence to safety protocols for staff and participants.
- Drive disciplined operations across Springfield and Holyoke, including participant movement, outreach intensity, program schedules, crew operations, jail engagement, daily site functioning, and cross-functional coordination.
- Ensure achievement of Roca's core performance standards: weekly contact with at least 80% of participants and Rewire CBT delivery with at least 60% of participants, while advancing participant progress, employment outcomes, reentry coordination, and measurable behavior change.
- Develop proficiency in Rewire CBT and actively model, coach, and reinforce Roca's behavior-change approach with managers and direct-service staff.
- Lead performance and data reviews to identify barriers to participant progress, engagement gaps, safety concerns, documentation issues, and operational inconsistencies, and drive timely improvement.
- Ensure accurate and timely participant documentation, outcome tracking, and use of Roca's data systems to support performance, accountability, and reporting.
- Oversee grant implementation, contract deliverables, reporting requirements, site budgets, assets, fiscal responsibility, and alignment with organizational strategy.
- Lead and strengthen Roca's public-safety and justice-system partnerships across Western Massachusetts, working closely with police, probation, the Hampden County Sheriff's Department, courts, prosecutors, and community partners to coordinate around high-risk young adults, reentry, violence reduction, and community safety.
- Serve as a key Roca leader in regional justice initiatives, including Springfield's Emerging Adult Court of Hope, strengthening collaboration across courts, probation, public safety, and community partners.
- Support coordination and alignment with the Young Women's program across Western Massachusetts while partnering with Executive Leadership on site positioning, growth opportunities, fundraising efforts, and strategic priorities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Roca is looking for a visible, resilient, trustworthy, and relationship-oriented leader with deep commitment to Roca's mission and the compassion, humility, and stamina to lead challenging work well. The ideal candidate makes difficult decisions, responds calmly to crises, and earns credibility with staff, public-safety partners, and community leaders.
Minimum Requirements
- 57 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in youth development, violence intervention, criminal justice, reentry, community-based services, public safety, or a related field, with demonstrated commitment to serving high-risk or justice-involved young people and communities.
- 5-7 years of management and supervision experience, including leading teams, coaching managers or staff, managing performance, addressing challenges directly, and supporting staff development.
- Strong judgment, strategic thinking, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and violence prevention skills in complex, high-pressure environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams, departments, systems, and diverse communities.
- Ability to manage multiple complex responsibilities with accuracy, sound prioritization, initiative, reliability, and sustained energy.
- Strong computer literacy and ability to use data systems to support documentation, create reports, quality improvement, and decision-making.
- Experience overseeing grants, contracts, deliverables, reporting requirements, budgets, assets, and fiscal responsibilities in alignment with organizational strategy.
- Willingness and ability to work alongside direct-service staff in the community, including during outreach, participant engagement, crisis response, and partner coordination.
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout the service area as needed, with a valid state-issued driver's license, reliable transportation, and a safe driving record.
- Ability to complete required background screening and work outside standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent experience accepted. Master's degree a plus.
- Direct frontline experience with high-risk young people is strongly preferred; strong leaders from probation, reentry, community corrections, violence intervention, public safety, youth-serving systems, or similar settings are encouraged to apply.
- Experience leading multi-site operations preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, coaching others, and working effectively with diverse cultures and communities.
- Willingness to learn and use emerging technologies, including AI-supported tools, to strengthen leadership, communication, coaching, and site performance.
Physical Demands:
This position requires the ability to perform the essential functions of the role with or without reasonable accommodation. The Director works in office, community, partner, and field-based settings and must travel throughout Western Massachusetts and other Roca locations as needed.
The role may require walking and standing during site visits, community engagement, partner meetings, and program activities. The Director may occasionally lift, carry, or move materials associated with office, meeting, training, or community-based work.
The position requires clear communication, use of standard office technology, travel between sites and meetings, and responsiveness to site needs, including urgent or crisis situations.
Work Environment:
Work occurs in office, site-based, community, correctional, court, partner, and outdoor settings. Conditions may vary based on participant needs, community events, site activity, weather, and partner locations. This is a fully in-person, on-site role and is not hybrid or remote. The role requires flexibility, sound judgment, and professionalism in routine and time-sensitive situations.
