Patient Benefit Specialist

Overview Virginia Cancer Specialists, affiliated with McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology, is seeking an experienced full‑time Patient Financial Counselor for our Radiation office at our Cancer Center in Fairfax, Virginia. Benefits Medical, Dental, Vision, Paid Holidays, and 401 K.

SCOPE

Under general supervision, responsible for insurance verification and eligibility, assessment of patient financial requirements, counseling patients on insurance benefits and co‑payments, obtaining pre‑authorization of services, maintaining accurate patient demographics, and adhering to the US Oncology Compliance Program, Code of Ethics and Business Standards. Responsibilities Ensures all insurance, demographic, and eligibility information is obtained and entered accurately. Performs insurance verification for all third‑party payers; obtains initial and subsequent pre‑authorization for services and surgeries. Re‑verifies benefits and obtains authorization and/or referral after treatment plan discussion. Uses the Summary of Patient Reimbursement and Liability form and obtains appropriate approvals as required. Conducts financial counseling on all patients prior to treatment, outlining obligations, billing practices, and payment arrangements. Documents financial counseling and forwards to Billing Office. Assists patients in obtaining financial assistance (Medicaid, drug replacement), external assistance (transportation, community services), and complete required forms. Collects co‑pays, deductibles and other out‑of‑pocket amounts at time of visit. Supports maintenance of manuals, logs and required documentation. Demonstrates patient confidentiality to protect privacy. Follows policies and contributes to front‑office efficiency; covers for and assists with other front‑office functions as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum three years of medical business office experience with insurance procedures and patient interaction. Physical Demands May require extended periods of sitting, stooping, bending, and stretching. Occasional lifting of files or paper up to 30 pounds. Requires manual dexterity to operate computer equipment. Vision must be correctable to 20/20; hearing normal for telephone contacts.
