Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Medical Surgical Day Unit (MSDU) provides comprehensive pre-operative and procedural nursing care for patients undergoing Interventional Radiology, MRI, and surgical procedures at the West Roxbury campus. The RN also administers infusion therapies such as IVIG and may float to the Ambulatory Surgery Unit in Jamaica Plain as needed.

This role requires strong clinical judgment, independent practice, and effective collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, high-quality patient care throughout all phases of the peri-procedural experience. The RN serves as a patient advocate and supports clinical, administrative, educational, and research aspects of the service.

• Deliver comprehensive pre-operative and procedural nursing care for Operating Room, Interventional Radiology, and MRI patients.
• Perform full nursing assessments; validate consents and H&P documentation; initiate IV access/venipuncture; and complete required pre-procedure testing.
• Verify accuracy of surgical site preparation, marking, and patient consent.
• Administer medications as ordered and monitor patient responses.
• Provide clear pre-operative teaching and review discharge instructions with patients and families.
• Monitor post-operative patients recovering from anesthesia or sedation, assessing for side effects or complications.
• Maintain knowledge of ASPAN standards, VHA directives, and service-level SOPs.
• Document all phases of care accurately and promptly in the electronic health record.
• Function independently and serve as Charge Nurse when assigned.
• Provide guidance and education to students and newly onboarded staff.
• Apply the nursing process to coordinate evidence-based, interdisciplinary care focused on health promotion and disease prevention.
• Participate in quality-improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and workflow efficiency.
• Collaborate on patient-flow processes including Travel, Housing, and Chaperone coordination.
• Provide clinic coverage as assigned and maintain required procedural and core competencies.
• Support patient care throughout the entire visit from check-in through discharge.
• Demonstrate strong communication skills and professional behaviors that support teamwork and collaboration with colleagues and patients.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 10:30 A.M.-7 P.M. or 9:30 A.M.-6 P.M.
