Animal Health Technician - Surgery (ANML HEALTH TCHN 3)

Veterinary Technician

Independent of supervision, in a hospital setting, provide moment to moment monitoring of anesthetized patients. Provide paraveterinary technical and nursing support. Provide technical and anesthetic support for a variety of surgical procedures.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position:

• Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Licensure.
• Experience independently, in a hospital setting, providing intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill or anesthetized small animals.
• Experience in calculating and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.
• Experience with animal restraint and performing venipuncture and placing vascular and urinary catheters.
• Experience with surgical asepsis and how it relates to direct contamination patients, instruments and sterile supplies.
• Experience to determine physical status of patients, recognizing changes in patient condition and responding appropriately.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in preparing operating room and related areas, procure, set-up and review surgical and anesthetic equipment, instruments and supplies prior to and after surgery.
• Experience in anticipating surgeons and patient needs during surgery and providing requested instrumentation and equipment.
• Experience in providing technical support in the O.R. and related areas by aseptically scrubbing, gowning and gloving.
• Experience handling complications of various surgical procedures; anticipating and responding quickly to surgeons and patients needs.

Department Overview:

The University of California of Davis Janice K. Hobbs Veterinary Medical Center of Southern California (UCD-Hobbs VMC) is a specialty referral and 24-hour emergency hospital and a clinical extension of the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine. Its primary mission is to provide high-quality specialty and emergency veterinary care to patients throughout Southern California and to serve as a trusted referral resource for regional veterinary practices. As an extension of an academic veterinary medical center, UCD-Hobbs VMC also provides opportunities for clinical education and training, including engagement with veterinary students and other learners. Clinical research and collaboration with UC Davis, UC San Diego, and other partners further support the hospital's mission, but are secondary to its primary clinical service role.

Work Environment:

No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment, procedure and other rooms or areas of the hospital. Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.
