Registered Nurse - Ambulatory Surgery Per Diem

Position Summary At Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat actual or potential health problems using nursing methods such as case finding, health teaching, and counseling. Incumbents provide care that supports and restores health and well‑being while adhering to a medical regimen. Job Duties & Essential Functions Assess the patient’s condition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort to integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan. Develop a written individualized care plan, including teaching needs and discharge planning. Administer direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are required. Administer medication. Practice infection control and maintain a clean, safe environment. Assume responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients; communicate changes in patient condition and questions regarding care to the Charge RN/Clinician. Maintain current written care plans; set priorities to meet patient needs; set goals with patient/family. Document patient/family teaching and responses in the medical record; ensure teaching aligns with that of the physician or designee. Communicate and work effectively with other staff and departments. Participate in unit or hospital‑based quality assurance activities or committees to advance the nursing profession at SBSH. Required Experience and Qualifications Maintain the ability to practice in the State of New York; failure to meet this legal requirement may impact employment status. Registered Nurses licensed on or after December 19, 2017, must obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 10 years of initial RN licensure to practice in New York State. Eligibility for or possession of a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State. Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association required. Current PALS provider certification from the American Heart Association required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association required. On‑call required for endoscopy. Two years of medical/surgical experience required. Preferred experience in Ambulatory Care setting. Preferred endoscopy experience. Physical Demands Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies. Assist with patient transfers, repositioning, and physical interventions as needed. Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, using appropriate safety techniques and equipment. Handle equipment and supplies needed for emergency care. React quickly to situations involving restraint, patient agitation, or aggression. Provide physical support in restraining or de‑escalating patients if necessary. Use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision. Document patient information, administer injections, and manipulate medical equipment. Maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends. Manage high‑stress situations with clear decision‑making and physical capacity. Handle emotional and physical challenges of caring for patients with agitation or mental health crises. Respond quickly and take rapid action, including using restraint procedures to stabilize patients in crisis situations. Completion of all physical demands tailored to the job’s nature, requiring alertness, engagement, and responsiveness, especially with acute psychiatric distress. Travel Requirements As part of employment at Southampton Hospital, there may be occasions when travel to other locations is needed to support operational needs. The above range represents SBSH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
