Meter Technician Department: Public Works Job Classification: Full Time Tech Net: 540 Pay Scale: Hourly Hourly Rate: Min - $22.56, Mid - $28.20, Max - $33.85 Annual Rate: Min - $46,932, Mid - $58,665, Max - $70,398 (depending on experience) Application Deadline: July 23, 2026 at 4:00 pm General Purpose Performs a variety of customer service, administrative, operation and maintenance duties related to fulfilling meter work orders, meter reading, meter maintenance, and troubleshooting/diagnosis. Performs day-to-day office support completing work orders and resolving customer complaints. Supervision Received Works under the general supervision of the Public Works Operation Manager. Supervision Exercised None Work Hours Public Works staff work 10‑hour days Monday‑Thursday. This position also requires on‑call duty on rotation with other Public Works staff. Essential Functions Customer Relations: Performs personable customer service accurately and effectively; resolves customer complaints; completes field orders generated by office; verifies account information in the field for accuracy; troubleshoots customer complaints regarding low/high water usage—check for leaks on irregular water usage; re‑reads meters for billing. Day‑to‑Day Operations: Reads meters and records final readings for closing accounts; installs meters for new connections; inspects, troubleshoots large and small meters; checks flows and calibrates readings; monitors meter inventory; performs meter repairs, test electronics, and utilizes flow bench to verify flow rates; monitors meter and MIU inventory and generates orders for new supply; reviews and maintains records of invoices for proper credit of meter return program; performs technical repair, maintenance, testing, and calibrating electrical metering equipment; follows up on work orders and phone requests; utilizes specialized software to test and validate equipment; receives meter installation requests; issues meters and equipment for installation; performs field installation and testing of metering equipment and wiring; performs programming of electronic meters to facilitate effective electronic readings; designs and installs meter applications for “high current” meter situations. Contract Monitoring: Meets with contractors issued hydrant permits by City and verifies proper hydrant and meter set‑up; reviews with contractor policy and methods regarding use of hydrant, including proper cross‑connection control; monitors usage and status of hydrant on weekly basis; communicates project status and meter and hydrant condition to appropriate office personnel for deposit refund. Cross‑Connection Control Functions: Conducts inspections of users; evaluates compliance status of individual users; initiates change to be made by users; assists in the maintenance of permanent records and files; prepares and completes reports for outside agencies; handles incoming questions providing appropriate information about plumbing codes and regulations; assists in the Cross‑Connection Control Program under the direction of the department head; enforces applicable codes and regulations such as requirement for back‑flow prevention; maintains and develops all permanent records and files; assists in the preparation and completion of reports for outside agencies. Public Works Maintenance: May be required to assist with Public Works maintenance operations when necessary. Performs other Public Works department duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of operating basic manual and power tools; standard practices, methods, materials and tools necessary for pipeline construction and repair activities; pipe fitting procedures; occupational hazards and safety precautions of trench work construction and pipeline maintenance work; hazards common to heavy equipment operation; water supply and distribution systems; interpersonal communication skills. Some skill in plumbing, electrical and related construction fields; skill in operating heavy equipment and common power tools. Ability to operate heavy equipment of various kinds under varying conditions; perform heavy physical labor; develop and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, elected officials, local agencies and the general public; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; work from blueprints; tolerate weather extremes in the work environment; perform basic mathematical computations for reading and using various meters, gauges and related devices. Special Qualifications: Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must be able to obtain a commercial driver’s license within one year of hire. Must be willing to work on‑call duty and 24‑hour standby. Work Environment: Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to performing required job functions. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking. Daily local travel required in normal course of job performance.
