Substitute Custodian

PRIMARY PURPOSE :

The Substitute Custodian assists in maintaining school buildings for a safe and clean environment on an as-needed. Performs cleaning duties in facilities to keep areas in clean and orderly condition. Cleans classrooms, restrooms, offices, corridors, walls and windows. Uses carpet cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, etc.

• Reports to the OMT Supervisor

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

The employee will be required to perform any other position-related duties requested by the School Administrator, OMT Supervisor and/or Superintendent.

• Perform overall building maintenance including but not limited to cleaning floors in classrooms, hallways, and stairways
• Clear trash and maintain all trash receptacles in the school building
• Maintain bathrooms in the building; duties including but not limited to cleaning sinks, toilets, water fountains, and replenishing bathroom supplies
• Clean classrooms; duties including but not limited to vacuuming, dusting, washing blackboards and spot mopping
• Maintain supplies and equipment in assigned closet
• Assist with snow removal on walkways, steps and entranceways
• Assists with the daily cleaning of the cafeteria
• Assists in the completion of the workload in the absence of other custodians
• Operate various types of equipment and machinery, which include water vacuum, hand trucks, vacuum cleaners, etc.
• Removes garbage from buildings each day
• Assists in providing summer cleaning of buildings which includes lifting and removing furniture from school rooms, cleaning floors and blinds, washing walls, doors and furniture
• Report any malfunctions and maintenance problems. Discuss work problems and/or schedule problems with management
• Provides assistance with any outside cleaning chores, which include sweeping sidewalks, and/or parking areas and picking up trash
• May be required to lock and/or unlock doors at the appropriate times daily
• Maintain strict confidentiality with respect to information concerning students, personnel and other administrative matters affecting the District
• Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor or designee

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :

• High School Diploma
• Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemical, products and equipment

COGNITIVE/COMMUNICATION ABILITIES :

• Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
• Ability to work under little supervision

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Ability to coordinate hand and foot with vision to physically position material prior to an operation
• Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized
• Usual lifting activity: Heavy, lifting up to 100 lbs. maximum and carrying objects up to 50 lbs.
• Requires occasional speaking (these activities are an essential part of the job at random intervals)
• Requires frequent hearing, and climbing (these activities are a usual and customary part of the job.)

• Current Act 34, Act 114 and Act 151 clearances
• School Health Form (including physical and TB test)
• PDE Form 6004 and Act 168 disclosure forms
