Open Position Deputy County Attorney Department County Attorney, Sheridan County Reports To Sheridan County Attorney Salary Range $102,966.32 to $110,833.47 DOE, Grade 25 Job Summary This position assists in the provision of legal services to the Sheridan County government. Major Duties Prosecutes misdemeanor and felony level crimes on behalf of the State of Wyoming including drafting and responding to motions, writing legal briefs, appearing in circuit and district courts, and trying cases in jury and bench trials Prepares and argues criminal case appeals from the Circuit Court to the District Court and at times to the Wyoming Supreme Court. Initiates and represents the State in legal pleadings for confidential juvenile actions and collaborates with other agencies via multi-disciplinary team meetings. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge Required by the Position Knowledge of state, federal, and local ordinances, statutes, and regulations. Knowledge of County policies, practices, procedures, codes and other local provisions. Knowledge of the rules and ethics governing civil and criminal law and procedure. Skill in conducting research, interpreting statutes, and drafting legal pleadings and other documents. Skill in negotiating. Trial practice skills for the prosecution of cases before a judge and a jury. Skill in using a computer and internet and based research tools. Supervisory Controls The County Attorney assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The work is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities. Guidelines Guidelines include state statutes; state and federal case law; state hunting and fishing regulations; state department of transportation regulations; rules of professional conduct; national standards; and state rules of criminal and civil procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. Scope and Effect The purpose of this position is to provide legal counsel to the County government, to meet the legal goals of county departments, and to perform the duties of a public prosecutor at the felony and misdemeanor levels. Successful performance ensures that county operations comply with all applicable requirements and results in the goal of seeking justice. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of law with a Juris Doctorate Degree Current member of the Wyoming State Bar. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Position is open until filled.
