Legal Assistant

To serve as a professional staff employee of the Indiana State Police whose primary responsibility is to assist the Department's Legal Counsel and members of the Legal Office. Job Duties include processing incoming Public Records Requests and fulfilling them within allotted timeframe, researching and analyzing law sources including statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal codes related to public records, learning and applying Indiana Code to APRA requests for determination of release or denial of records, processing body and dash camera footage to ensure appropriate redactions are made per IC, reviewing Indiana Code and Indiana Administrative Code to make proposals regarding potential language changes, coordinating assembly of documentation required as the result of subpoenas and discovery requests if needed, ensuring proper indexing and filing of original legal documents as needed, answering phones for Legal Office personnel, and performing other duties as required.

Skills:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Paralegal certification with 2 years paralegal experience
• Basic Computer skills
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Strong attention to detail
• Able to communicate clearly and professionally, both in writing and orally
• Prior experience handling sensitive or confidential information
• Prior experience w/Legal Research sites LexisNexis and Westlaw
• Prior experience conceptualizing and developing programs and procedures
• Paralegal competency certification w/National Federation of Paralegal Associations or CLA/CP certification w/National Assoc. of Legal Assistants
• Associates degree (or higher) with paralegal Studies w/certification
