Rate of Pay: Up to $37.31 per hour, plus per diem for those who qualify

Shift: All Shifts
Hours: 40 hours per week

DESCRIPTION

Hutco, Inc. is currently seeking experienced Outside Machinists for shipbuilding work in Newport News, Virginia.

Qualified candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of documented shipyard or naval experience as a First Class Machinist . Candidates should have extensive experience with shipboard mechanical systems, precision measuring equipment, technical drawings, equipment installation, repair, overhaul, and alignment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Perform mechanical repairs, overhauls, installations, and maintenance on shipboard equipment and systems.
• Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics, technical manuals, and other technical documentation.
• Install, repair, overhaul, and maintain shipboard mechanical equipment.
• Perform valve overhauls, including steam and WOG applications.
• Perform lube oil flushing and hydrostatic testing.
• Perform shaft and optical alignment.
• Complete precision fitting and mechanical assembly work.
• Use precision measuring instruments including micrometers, dial indicators, rulers, and calipers.
• Operate torque wrenches, grinders, boring bars, drill presses, portable mills, and other applicable tools and equipment.
• Follow applicable technical, quality, OSHA, and shipyard safety requirements.

SHIPBOARD SYSTEMS & EQUIPMENT

Candidates should have experience working with equipment and systems that may include:

• Winches and anchor windlasses
• Steering gear
• Air compressors
• Valves and pumps
• Diesel engines
• Gas turbines
• Reduction gears
• Propulsion systems
• Shafts and propellers
• Rudders
• Generators
• Steam turbines
• Hydraulic systems
• Elevators and doors
• Weapons systems
• Deck equipment

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum 4 years of documented First Class Machinist experience in shipyard or naval environments .
• Experience using precision measuring instruments and alignment tools.
• Ability to read and work from blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and mechanical drawings.
• Experience performing complex mechanical installation, repair, overhaul, and alignment work.
• Knowledge of shipbuilding terminology, equipment, fasteners, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to work independently after required onboarding and orientation.

PHYSICAL / WORKING CONDITIONS

• Frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Stand and walk for extended periods.
• Climb vertical ladders and work at heights.
• Work in confined and restricted spaces.
• Work around dust, fumes, odors, machinery, and industrial equipment.
• Perform physically demanding work in varying temperatures and humidity conditions.
• Use required hand tools, power tools, and machinery.
• Comply with all required PPE and shipyard safety procedures.
