This program provides students with an opportunity to translate their public health knowledge learned in the classroom into community-based practice within the larger DC community while gaining essential team and leadership skills. This academic year-long opportunity offers students from various professional backgrounds and fields of public health study the ability to participate in meaningful, responsible community engagement with Community Partners and contribute to social change. Position Specific Summary The Urban Health Fellowship Program (UHP) seeks a dedicated Teaching Fellow to support the development, facilitation, and evaluation of community-engaged learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate students. This role is ideal for doctoral students passionate about health equity, community-engaged practice, and leadership development. It is well suited for a student interested in gaining coaching/mentoring and instructional experience. The Teaching Fellow will play a key role in mentoring Urban Health Fellows, coordinating action-learning initiatives, and fostering collaborative partnerships with community-based organizations. Community engagement activities are conducted in person, including sessions held at partner sites and Community Conversations on campus. This is a unique opportunity to gain pedagogical skills in higher education while contributing to a dynamic service-learning fellowship program committed to preparing the next generation of public health change agents. Key Responsibilities Facilitate student learning through small-group discussions, planning sessions, and community-based project support. Provide active mentorship, coaching, and guidance to Urban Health Fellows in project planning, implementation, stakeholder engagement, and professional development. Facilitate reflective learning opportunities that help Fellows connect community experiences to public health concepts, leadership development, and professional growth. Provide timely and constructive feedback on project deliverables and presentations. Support the design and implementation of Community Conversations, in partnership with UHP staff and external partners. Conduct regular check-ins with community partners to gather feedback, review engagement activities, and support continuous program improvement. Represent UHP in meetings with community partners and campus stakeholders, as needed. Coordinate community-engaged projects, including timeline development, stakeholder communication, and outcome tracking. Oversee the quality of the Fellows' work, including community-engaged projects, ethical collaboration, overall professional development, and adherence to program expectations. Assist in the evaluation and continuous improvement of the Fellowship curriculum and community partnerships. Collaborate with program staff on project documentation, reporting, and knowledge sharing. Perform other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Qualifications Demonstrated experience leading community-engaged projects, particularly in urban settings. Strong facilitation, mentoring, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, faculty, and community partners. Commitment to the service-learning model and values of the Urban Health Program, including equity, inclusion, and social justice.
