Join Our Product Engineering Team!
The Weyerhaeuser Product Engineering team plays a critical role in supporting the performance, quality, and compliance of Weyerhaeuser wood products. The team is responsible for code compliance, product evaluation and design, quality assurance, raw material assessment, and technical support for product applications across a wide range of markets.

As a Senior Wood Chemist/Scientist on the Product Engineering team, you will collaborate with engineers and wood scientists to evaluate, develop, and advance adhesives, waxes, sealers, and other treatment technologies that improve product performance and manufacturability. Your work will span laboratory testing, manufacturing trials, quality assurance initiatives, and technical support for procurement and safety functions.
This position is based in Federal Way, Washington. The role requires moderate travel, primarily within the United States and Canada, to support manufacturing facilities and research activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and expand expertise in wood products and manufacturing technologies, including wood and additive properties, supplier relationships, processing characteristics, performance evaluation, identification of alternative materials and technologies, and the development of innovative products, additives, and testing methodologies.

• Effectively working with business managers, mill technical/quality directors, procurement specialists, and suppliers to conduct laboratory-scale experiments and mill trials.

• Analyzing data and presenting test results in a timely manner to effectively communicate information and drive fact-based decisions.

• Identifying, communicating, and addressing technical market challenges and opportunities resulting from awareness of proposed changes in standards or regulations.

• Leadership and support of mill continuous improvement projects.

• Supporting capital program by evaluating impacts of proposed equipment or process changes on product performance.

• Involvement in product testing and laboratory experiments.

• MS or PhD degree in Wood Science, Chemistry, Materials Science or other related fields.
• 15 or more years’ experience working with engineered wood products.
• Knowledge of a wide array of additives and alternative raw materials and their effects on product performance. This includes the price of existing and alternative additives and the ability to support the negotiation process.
• Understanding manufacturing processes and the capability to simulate these processes in lab scale evaluation programs.
• Strong written, oral, and presentation skills with the ability to lead and influence.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Good attention to detail and deadlines while working across multiple projects and schedules.
• A willingness to flow-to-work as needed.

What We Offer:

Compensation: This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $108,500-$162,700 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 15% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Retirement: Employees are able to enroll in our company’s 401k plan, which includes a paid company match in addition to our annual contribution equal to 5% of your base salary.

Paid Time Off or Vacation: We provide eligible employees who are scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week with 3-weeks of paid vacation to use during your first year of employment. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 holiday hours and paid parental leave for all full-time employees.
