Purpose Under the general direction of the General Manager, manage multiple operations that control the flow of materials to and from the location in a timely, productive and cost‑effective manner. Operations include manufacturing, distribution, warehouse, etc. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Overall operations and physical conditions of the location’s facilities and equipment. Daily operations of the delivery and warehousing functions. Partner with department leads to train and develop personnel. Budget and control operating costs to meet profit targets. Plan operations strategies, set department priorities and sequences for product flow. Review performance, compile operational reports on on‑time deliveries, back orders, hours worked, shipments received, etc. Resolve problems related to processes, costs, orders, maintenance, inventory, equipment, services and systems. Prepare overall schedules and coordinate staffing with team leaders in Warehouse, Shipping, Yard, Office and Purchasing. Address employee relations issues, resolving issues affecting performance. Foster cross‑department communication with Production, Sales, Controller and other key team members. Participate in training programs for drivers, yard personnel and supervisors. Analyze and maintain vendor evaluations and recommend revisions. Participate in decisions to accept or reject orders. Direct implementation of safe operating practices in compliance with company and regulatory policies. Plan and implement equipment and facility upgrades and maintenance. Active participation in professional trade groups such as the Home Builder’s Association. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise employees such as Plant Managers or Supervisors; responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining team members, addressing complaints and resolving problems. Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree from a 4‑year college or university, and four years of directly related experience in the lumber or building materials industry with all phases of the business; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge or experience in building materials, procurement, inventory management and supervision of people is required. Strong customer service experience and good organizational skills are also required. Competencies Language Skills – Read, analyze, and interpret common financial reports, trade journals and legal documents; respond to inquiries; write speeches and articles; present information to top management and the public; persuade groups to take action; influence others; demonstrate leadership and teamwork. Mathematical Skills – Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, discounts, commissions, geometry; develop and interpret graphs and charts. Reasoning Ability – Define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, interpret technical instructions, modify standard approaches, develop alternative courses of action, analyze unrelated problems. Computer Skills – Thorough knowledge or rapid learning of order processing/delivery systems. Work Environment / Physical Activity Occasional travel may be required. Must follow the company’s safety policies and procedures. The manager regularly sits, uses hands, talks, hears, stands and walks. Specific vision and limited driving are required. Noise level is usually moderate. The work environment includes an open office area with occasional exposure to outside weather.
