Accounting Intern

Salary: $23.51 - $25.87 hourly Location: Lakewood, CA Job Type: Student Intern Job Number: 202600006 Department: Finance Opening Date: 05/08/2026 General Purpose The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD or District) is a California Special District responsible for managing and protecting local groundwater resources for over 4 million residents. As a local government agency, WRD ensures a reliable supply of high-quality groundwater is available through stormwater capture and recycled water. The WRD seeks a motivated intern for the Accounting and Finance Department to gain real-world experience supporting professional functions in entry-level accounting duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The intern will work with accountants, managers, and staff, performing various tasks related to accounting and finance. The role requires flexibility, motivation, and the ability to handle multiple activities. The ideal candidate is a full‑time student at an accredited college/university with a minimum of two years completed and capable of working up to 20 hours per week. Graduate students are encouraged to apply. Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook) and basic principles of accounting and data entry. Excellent oral and written communication skills. High level of organization, tact, and a positive, proactive attitude. Ability to work independently or as part of a team and adapt to new concepts in a changing environment. Qualifications Basic understanding of accounting principles from at least two years of undergraduate study in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook. Experience with data entry and fundamental accounting principles. Current enrollment as a junior or senior in an undergraduate program at an accredited college/university or recent graduate (within 6 months) with a degree related to the internship. Graduate students are encouraged. Successful completion of a physical exam and background check. Provision of current college transcript. Duration Each internship lasts one 12‑month period. Interns work part‑time; schedules may be extended during school breaks or per student availability. Flexible schedule: 10‑20 hours per week, coordinated with school, not exceeding 990 hours in the fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Compensation $23.51 per hour for undergraduate interns and $25.87 per hour for graduate students. Interns are considered temporary employees and are not eligible for benefits unless required by law. Temporary employees and interns are eligible for 40 hours of paid sick leave after 90 calendar days of employment; unused hours are forfeited as of December 31st.
