Head Softball Coach

The Head Softball Coach is responsible for leading, organizing, and developing the school's softball program in a manner that reflects the Catholic mission, values, and educational philosophy of the school. The Head Coach is responsible for the overall direction of the program, including player development, team culture, coaching staff, practices, competition, communication, and compliance with OHSAA, school, and athletic department policies. The Head Coach serves as an educator, mentor, role model, and leader who understands that the development of student-athletes extends beyond the softball field. Essential Responsibilities Provide overall leadership and direction for the softball program. Establish a positive, competitive, respectful, and inclusive team culture. Develop a clear philosophy for the program that emphasizes character, teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, academic achievement, and athletic development Promote pride in the school and its athletic program. Serve as a positive representative of the school at practices, competitions, meetings, and community events. Player Development Teach and develop fundamental softball skills appropriate to the age and ability of student-athletes. Develop individual and team skills through effective instruction, practice planning, and competition. Evaluate student-athlete performance and provide constructive feedback. Encourage student-athletes to pursue continuous improvement. Help players develop leadership, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, and teamwork. Provide appropriate opportunities for student-athletes to develop their skills and understand their roles within the team. Coaching and Staff Management Select, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches in accordance with Diocesan and school policies. Establish responsibilities and expectations for assistant coaches. Promote a unified coaching philosophy and consistent expectations among the coaching staff. Conduct regular staff meetings and communicate effectively with assistant coaches. Practice and Game Management Plan and conduct organized, purposeful, and appropriately challenging practices. Prepare the team for scheduled competitions. Manage games and make appropriate strategic and personnel decisions. Ensure that all practices and competitions are conducted in a safe and professional manner. Student-Athlete Welfare Place the safety, health, educational development, and well-being of student-athletes at the forefront of the program. Follow all school, Diocesan, and OHSAA regulations. Follow established procedures for injuries, emergencies, weather conditions, and other safety concerns. Maintain appropriate boundaries and professional relationships with student-athletes. Recognize and respond appropriately to academic, behavioral, or personal concerns involving student-athletes and communicate with appropriate school personnel when necessary. Academic Expectations Promote academic achievement as an essential component of participation in athletics. Monitor student-athlete academic responsibilities when appropriate. Encourage student-athletes to maintain satisfactory academic progress. Work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, counselors, and parents/guardians to support student-athletes. Communication Communicate clearly and professionally with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, teachers, administrators, athletic department personnel, officials, and opposing schools. Provide timely information regarding schedules, expectations, practices, competitions, and program requirements. Address concerns in a professional and constructive manner. Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding student-athletes and school matters. Promote a positive public image of the softball program and school. Compliance and Professional Responsibilities Attend required coaches' meetings, professional-development activities, and athletic department meetings. Complete all required certifications, trainings, background checks, and compliance requirements. Maintain accurate records as required by the school and athletic department. Follow school policies regarding conduct, social media, communication, travel, fundraising, eligibility, and student-athlete supervision. Demonstrate professionalism and sound judgment at all times. Qualifications Previous softball coaching experience preferred. Strong knowledge of softball fundamentals, strategy, rules, and player development. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with high school students. Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, coaches, parents/guardians, and student-athletes. Current CPR/AED and first-aid certification, or willingness to obtain required certifications. Successful completion of Pupil Activity Permit Commitment to the academic, personal, and athletic development of student-athletes. Work Environment The position requires frequent work during afternoons, evenings, weekends, and school holidays, including practices, games, tournaments, meetings, and team activities. The coach must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform duties associated with supervising and coaching student-athletes. Supervisory Relationship The Head Softball Coach reports to the Athletic Director and works collaboratively with school administrators and other members of the athletic department.
