AGRICULTURAL/WEIGHTS & MEASURES INSPECTOR II

Responsibilities Perform various inspections and investigations on agricultural and related items, ensuring compliance with labeling, weighing, and measuring codes, use of pest control, and handling of shipments for compliance with regulations; use handheld or other test equipment (e.g., pesticide air testing devices, refractometers, scales, hydrometers, laptop/tablet computers); determine presence of injurious pests, estimate control needs, and calculate appropriate fees. Prepare written documents such as notices of violation, reports of findings and recommended actions, inspection certificates, and maintain records; communicate findings clearly to relevant parties. Provide technical assistance to employees, other agencies, and the public, respond to inquiries and complaints, and testify in administrative, civil, or criminal actions and proceedings. Represent the department at public functions and other events, delivering presentations and informational materials to industry groups and the public. Participate in and facilitate training programs (workshops, conferences, training sessions) regarding inspection, investigation, enforcement activities, and safe and effective use of tools and equipment. Qualifications and Experience Option I: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in agricultural science, biological science, chemical science, physical science, mathematics, or statistics *AND* two (2) years of experience at the level of Agricultural/Weights and Measures Inspector I performing inspections for a public jurisdiction. Option II: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any discipline with a minimum of 30 semester units (or equivalent 45 quarter units), or equivalent, in one or any combination of the following fields: agricultural science, biological science, chemical science, physical science, mathematics, and/or statistics *AND* the same two (2) years of experience. Licenses and Certifications Valid State of California weights and measures license in Weight Verification and Measurement Verification. Valid State of California agricultural license in Commodity Regulation, Pest Prevention and Plant Regulation, and Pesticide Regulation. Valid California Class C Driver License required; a Class A or Class B driver license may be required for certain positions. Physical Class IV Arduous: involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, bending, twisting, working on irregular surfaces, and occasional extraordinary physical activity. Examination Content This exam will consist of a multiple-choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted 100%, covering: Professional Potential, Achievement, Coping With Uncertainty, Responsibility, Working To High-Quality Standards, Willingness To Learn, Working Relationships, Analyzing Information, Learning Quickly, Generating New Ideas, Using Time Efficiently, Adapting To Change, Deductive Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Professional/Technical Expertise. Applicants must receive a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be added to the Register. Availability Appointees will be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, overtime, and holidays.
