Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment, Neuro-Oncology

UT MD Anderson

This is a Clinical Faculty Appointment that reports to the Chairman of the Department of Neuro-Oncology, who is responsive to the Head of the Division of Cancer Medicine. Provides clinical expertise in epilepsy and neurophysiology testing including electroencephalograms (EEGs) and intraoperative monitoring (IOMs), as well as patient care and management for patients with neurological effects of systemic or nervous system cancers and neurological complications of cancer. EEG expertise includes rapid diagnosis of non-convulsive status and treatment and being on call on rotating basis. IOM includes supra, infratentorial, skull base and spinal cord tumors, and vascular surgical and interventional radiology cases. Awake surgical case monitoring experience is preferred. Ability to perform EMG/NCS to diagnose neuropathies, plexopathy, neuromuscular junction disorders or myopathies is desirable but not required. Participates in teaching neuro oncology fellows, neurology residents and medical students in the specialty of neurology. Participates in clinical research related to the neurological complications of cancer. Fellowship training in clinical neurophysiology with IOM and EEG/Epilepsy expertise is required; additional training in neuromuscular disorders with EMG/NCS expertise is desired but not required. Candidate should be board certified in American Board of Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology or Epilepsy with ABPN or ABCN and meet criteria for full medical licensure in the state of Texas. Provides expertise in neurology and clinical neurophysiology. Has expertise in conducting neurophysiological testing and interpretation for EMG/NCS. Ability to perform EMG/NCSs to diagnose neuropathies, plexopathy, neuromuscular junction disorders and myopathies. Provides consultations for patients with neurological disorders including neurological complications of cancer and treatment related neurotoxicities and being on call in a rotating schedule. Participates in the teaching of the neuro-oncology fellows, neurology residents and medical students in the specialty of neurology. Participation in academic activities is encouraged including clinical research related to the neurological complications of cancer. Provide Clinical neurophysiological expertise for electromyography/nerve conduction studies (EMG/NCS) and management of patients with peripheral nerve and neuromuscular disorders. Additional training in EEG/IOM is desirable but not required. Provide inpatient and outpatient clinical care for cancer patients with neurological complications of the disease or cancer therapy. Develop and maintain a neurophysiology/cancer neurology practice for patients referred to the UT MD Anderson. Provide physician staffing for the outpatient clinic and the neurology consultative inpatient service at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other clinical neurologist/neuro oncologist with the same level of training and experience. Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within 2 working days. Complete patient documentation for medical records with time frames provided by the institution. Will require dictating in a clear and concise manner and visual review of documents. Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with referring physicians regarding patient care and treatment. Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening to and assimilating information from the conference. Requires appropriate communication to for neurology/neuro oncology patients and other referring providers by phone conversations or in writing. Provide inpatient and outpatient clinical care to a population of cancer patients with neurological complications of the disease or cancer therapy. Specifically provide neurophysiologic expertise for assessment of patients with cancer. Develop and maintain a neurology-practice for patients referred to the UT MD Anderson. Provide physician staffing for the outpatient clinic and the inpatient consultative neurology service at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other clinical neurologist/neuro oncologist with the same level of training and experience. Engagement in clinical research and scholarly activity in keeping with the goals of the department is encouraged. Provide a balanced and integrated educational experience in neurology for residents, medical students and neuro oncology fellows, and the management of cancer in the central nervous system for those who rotate through the clinical consultative/neurology service and clinic. Attend and participate in department/division teaching and continuing education conferences. Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary. Visually review all documents pertaining to committee functions. Represent the Department of Neuro Oncology in local, regional, state and national matters pertaining to the field of neuro oncology and effects of cancer on the central nervous system. Will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with department colleagues verbally or in writing. Practice in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities. Strive to be a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, students, APN & PAs rotating on the service. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the department. Must be able to work within a context of close interpersonal relationships including other physicians, patients and subordinates. Qualifications Doctorate -level degree in a field appropriate to Faculty role/Department mission Licensed to practice in Texas Board certified (or obtained within department timeline), unless exempted Experience At least 2 years' experience as Instructor or 3 years' post degree with any combination of time as a Clinician, Clinical Scientist or, GME Trainee.
